By Randy Rice | Special to McDonald County Reconnection McDonald County schools have a reputation for inventive educational programs that provide students with unique opportunities. One of the most creative of these programs involves a partnership with the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce: the McDonald County Student Chamber of Commerce Coffee Shop. "The project provides high school students with an opportunity to gain real-world business experience while running a coffee shop at the Chamber office," said Kristy Gilgen, MCHS business teacher and coordinator for the project. "Students will learn important business skills such as how to manage a budget, how to market a product, how to develop customer service skills, and how to use technology to run the shop." The Chamber obtained a grant to provide the necessary equipment, such as an espresso machine, coffee grinders, and other supplies. The students will be responsible for managing the shop. The Chamber will provide guidance and mentorship to the students to ensure that they are successful. "The idea came from Charla Brewer at the Chamber office a few years ago," Kristy said. "She tested the idea out on a very small scale for one year. To fund the plan, last year she applied for and received a grant from TMobile. The plans right now are to try and open sometime in March." Kristy believes the coffee shop opportunity will help business students in high school by introducing them to the fundamentals of running a business. "They can learn about customer service, managing costs, marketing, and other important business concepts," she said. "It will also provide them with valuable experience in dealing with customers and employees. Additionally, it can help them develop important skills such as communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. Finally, it can help them build their resumé and establish relationships with important contacts in the business world." Kristy has been teaching business for 25 years. Several years ago, she had the opportunity to open a coffee shop in the high school and it was a big hit. "We have had so much success with just the small-scale shop in the high school," she said. "You can sit up there in a classroom, and you can lecture all day long. But when somebody has to do it hands-on, they actually get it. Kids love learning hands-on." Kristy said she is hoping the community steps up and supports this effort of the Chamber to support these kids. "We need people to come out and show their support for our student chamber coffee shop," she said. "I love the opportunity to be part of a collaborative community, to meet and work with motivated students, and to be a part of a local business that is making a positive impact in the community. I also love the sense of purpose I get from helping the students learn about running a business and gain real-world experience."
