8 www.DesertMessenger.com February 15, 2023 The Salvation Army happenings Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank update We Broke Our Record! You would think that would be a good thing. But in the food bank business we want our numbers to go down! The food bank supplied groceries to over 1600 households in January! That doubles the households we did in 2022 and up from the 400 house- hold we were doing before COVID and inflation in 2018. The Quartzsite Food Bank is a pri- vate 501c3 nonprofit, which means we raise all our own funds. We raise funds through fundraisers, grants, businesses and people like you who donate to us. If you cannot donate money to us right now did you know you can gift the food bank a car or RV. You can also leave the food bank a gift of money, real estate or other items in your will, Beneficiary Deed or even designate retirement IRA accounts or stock investments to the Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank. You can also have a Legacy Page on our website QuartzsiteFoodBank.com. Do you work and owe AZ Taxes? You can donate that money to the food bank instead of paying the state with the AZ Tax Credit. You can still donate up till April 15 and get the tax credit. That is not a tax write off but a credit on your actual AZ taxes that you owe. Up to $800 of your AZ taxes that you do not have to pay. Dollar for dollar of your donations to us. Don't forget to pick up your gov- ernment boxes at the Western Col- lege 1st and 3rd Mondays 8am to 12. Watch for changes in their days and times on Facebook at Yuma Com- munity Food Bank. The Quartzsite Transit bus service has free rides to the food bank, just call them at 928-927-4333 x 3 for details. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Desert Flyers host Fly-in Feb. 18 What busy times in quirky Quartzsite this past month. Lots of new shoppers and donors with amazing items donated to us.. We get the most wonderful items. Are you looking for a new Class C motorhome cover, a Queen size cooling memory foam pad, a wall mount ironing board cabinet, how about a Dodge pick-up bumper, a Smith Corona DeVille 580 spell right dictionary electric typewriter, or a very nice collection of older glass kerosene lanterns? These are a few of the amazing things we have. Please do not leave items outside afterhours as they have been found scattered all over on the front pad. Call if you need special arrange- ments. During business hours, please bring items inside to the do- nation cart. We will sort and sani- tize them as quickly as we can for our amazing volunteer workers to process. Clothing can be kept on hangers. Thanks so much. Remember our paperback books are now alphabetized too. We do recycle ink cartridges, eye- glasses, and we do have stamps for sale too. We want to thank the Town of Quartzsite for an amazing Commu- nity Outreach grant award. We have been able to purchase several cases of Heater Meals. These are most helpful for those in need. These are self-heating nutritious meals for our clients. We are adding no printers to our not accepted list-seems it is cheaper to buy new printer that comes with new print cartridge. Our motto for items accepted, "Would you give the item to a friend?" We cannot accept mattresses or older "fat" backed televisions. If you donate a work- ing TV, please include the remote. Thanks. We always have at home jobs for those that wish to help at home. We always have bags to lay out for ap- preciative Clerk Holly, simple sew repair items, cut, and staple items, etc. Let me know if you would like to be contacted for this assistance. Please understand that our build- ing has no windows, no air exchange ventilation, our aisles are tight, and we have many senior volunteers with health concerns, we will con- tinue to require a face covering, for both us and our amazing shoppers. We will follow the local health de- partment recommendation; "when indoors wear a mask". We appreci- ate your understanding. #LOVE is that condition in the human spirt so profound that it empowers us to develop courage; to trust that courage and build bridges with it; to trust those bridges and cross over them so we can reach each other" ~Maya Angelou We thank our volunteers and our patrons for reaching out and sup- porting each other.
