Kennedy QIA Roof upgrade approved QIA (Quartzsite Improvement As- soc.) at 235 E. Ironwood Street, is the oldest non-profi t in Quartzsite. It was formed in 1961 as a 501, c. (4), a social welfare, non-profi t or- ganization. The original Commu- nity Building, constructed in 1968, burned to the ground in 1969. Once rebuilt, a small tornado signifi cantly damaged the roof in 1973. "Makeshift" repairs were conduct- ed at that time. In 1979, roofi ng nails were replaced with screws; other minor repairs were conducted. In 1980 (43 years ago), the entire roof was coated with 1-1/2" of sprayed urethane; and, was painted white. Since 1980, the unrelenting heat in the desert has "bubbled" and ema- ciated the urethane coating. Mois- ture trapped under the urethane has resulted in deterioration of the metal roofi ng; water leaks; and has created some dry rot in the support- ing structure. Repairs have been conducted for the last 12 years to fi x small areas of roof damage and leaks resulting from these issues. The roof has deteriorated to a con- dition requiring total replacement of this portion of the roof. Today, following a lengthy period of bids and review of the roof con- ditions, the QIA Board completed contractual negotiations and unani- mously approved the re-roof of the eastern portion of the QIA Commu- nity Center. The Board approved a contract with United Roofi ng and Restoration of Arizona, LLC. The low contract bid was $57,630. The fi nal contract price was negotiated by QIA Presi- dent, Gary Rhinevauld, to a fi nal price of, $55,130. The QIA Board and members have made a con- certed effort to raise funds for the roof replacement. To date, through a Go-Fund-Me Effort, and focused fund-raising efforts at meetings and events including the recent Pow Wow Gem & Mineral Show these efforts have raised $20,000 in the last year from the community and visitors. The balance of the funds needed will be supplemented by a contribu- tion by Quartzsite Off-Road, an or- ganization under the aegis of QIA; and, a portion of the net proceeds from the recent Pow Wow. 2023 QIA Board Members: Gary Rhinevault, President; Nancy Nich- ols, Vice President; Shirley Hop- kins, Treasurer; Christy Elliot, Act- ing Secretary; Directors: Danny Thompson, Howard Andreasen, Janice Dike, Sheryl Wells, and Mark Goldberg. These improvements will make it possible for QIA to provide constructive community activities and services well into the future. For more information, call the QIA 9am-1pm Monday-Friday at 928- 927-6325. Gary Rhinevault QIA President
