"Brian's Song" (1971) A landmark television drama, this true story made stars of James Caan and Billy Dee Williams as football-playing peers Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, whose bond didn't waver in the face of serious illness. "The Longest Yard" (1974) The recent remake went for broader laughs, but director Robert Aldrich's original is a perfect blend of humor and brawn, with Burt Reynolds as a former player who coaches fellow inmates against guards. "North Dallas Forty" (1979) The screen version of Peter Gent's novel has an authenticity that lets you feel every ache of Nick Nolte's character.
