Ice Age Trail - LaBudde Creek Segment The Ice Age Scenic Trail meanders through the heart and soul of the Kettle Moraine, highlighting glacial features such as the 4-mile long Parnell Esker whose ridge provides a lovely view of Butler Lake; Greenbush Kettle, one of the most symmetrical deep depressions in the area; or the Dundee Kame, an intriguingly shaped, conical hill. The LaBudde Creek Segment is a 3.35-mile portion of the trail that features small hills and easy rollers. This segment is a draw for day hikers visiting Elkhart Lake. Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit The Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest is comprised of nearly 30,000 acres and contains some of the most stellar glacial remnants of the last Ice Age. In fact, this region was formed as two tongue-shaped ice sheets collided, creating a valley of ice some 10,000 years ago. As these huge sheets of ice melted, the meltwater cascaded into crevasses carrying sand, gravel, and boulders, depositing them along the way. This is what shaped the rolling ridges and deep kettles – large crater-like depressions – that make up the topography of this beautiful forest. Kettle Moraine Scenic drive Enjoy the beauty, variety and geology of the Kettle Moraine State Forest on this scenic route. The northern end begins near Elkhart Lake and leads all the way to the southern end at Whitewater Lake. There are numerous places to explore and enjoy the forest along the 31-mile drive. A handout of the scenic drive is available at all State Forest Offices. 29 | ELKHARTLAKE.COM hiking, Biking &Trails Visit the Elkhart Lake Visitor's center for a full recreation map with hiking, biking and snowshoeing trails around the Elkhart Lake area.
