WINTER 2023 ΣΦΕ C O L O R A D O A L P H A s U N I V E R S I T Y O F C O L O R A D O S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N FlatiroN THE O n December 14, 2021, SigEp at the University of Colorado at Boulder was closed due to repeated violations of SigEp risk management policies. Those violations, coupled with earlier issues and multiple membership reviews, led to this decision by SigEp's National Board of Directors. This was despite substantial efforts by the national Fraternity and the local Alumni and Volunteer Corporation and mentors to help our Chapter improve. The Chapter was not occupying the house at 1005 Broadway at the time because Colorado Alpha was unable to fill the house during the pandemic-driven lockdown. When a chapter is closed, several years usually pass before considering plans to restart the Chapter, as restart attempts are less successful while the former members—and those who knew them—are still on campus. The top strategic goal of SigEp is growth. A part of that goal is 30 new, high-performing chapters and increasing our on-campus presence from the current 12,000 brothers to 16,000 undergraduate men by the 125th anniversary of SigEp's founding (2026). Restarting chapters requires significant resources with no guarantee of success. These scarce resources are allocated by assessing a chapter and university's feasibility for a successful restart. Three categories have been identified that help determine the likelihood of success: Manpower Potential The chapter and campus' ability to achieve and maintain at least a 60-man membership. Volunteer Engagement The AVC is committed to a return (financially, with a mentor committee that is engaged and educated on SigEp today). University Partnership The university's policies and procedures are conducive to a successful SigEp chapter. We are discussing how best to proceed once the time is right to consider reestablishing our Chapter at CU. The current thought is that we separate the responsibilities related to reestablishing our Chapter from the operation of the physical structure (the House). Some Boulder alumni have backgrounds in expansion or are currently involved in expansion efforts at other campuses, and we will certainly leverage that experience and expertise. SigEp's strategy for Chapter restarts—and membership recruitment in general—is evolving. This year's restart attempts on other campuses are progressing well. Meanwhile, campus environments for Greek life are also changing. The AVC Board of Directors has continued to steward the assets of the Chapter. The house is currently occupied by the Phi Mu sorority. It is being kept in good condition. All indications are that the AVC will be able to keep the house occupied and financially solvent for the foreseeable future. We are grateful to these brothers for their service. If you would like to be part of either effort (the team working toward a future restart or the team working to preserve the Chapter's house and other assets), please reach out to sigepcoalphaavc@gmail.com.
