Instead, for the first time but the vehicle wasn't located by law enforcement. For many smartphone owners, the alert was something they'd never heard or experienced before. Patrol units were advised, See ALERT, page 7A Sanctuary turns 35 County cracks down on walnut theft By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Tehama County joined with Butte and Glenn counties Tuesday as the Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance adding a chapter of county code intended to address the escalating problem of walnut thefts in the region. The chapter establishes a means of verifying ownership of walnuts in order to prevent and deter theft of a commodity that had a value of $103 million in Tehama County alone last year. The amended ordinance will be in effect in time for the upcoming harvest season. Similar ordinances were recently adopted in Butte and Glenn counties, farm bureaus in all three counties have supported the move. Other returning favorites include demonstrations on horseshoeing, horse grooming and saddling scheduled throughout the day, plus A dozen Calif. leaders will revamp imperiled parks SACRAMENTO (AP) — A group of California business, education and nonprofit leaders — including Monterey Bay Aquarium founding director Julie Packard — have agreed to help revamp the state parks system in an effort to restore confidence and financial stability to an institution rocked by scandal. The dozen volunteers will spend the next 18 months addressing the problems that led to the state threatening to close 70 of the 280 parks in the system after long years of funding shortages — and more recent revelations that now-departed leaders socked money in a secret fund. To help raise funds to care for the Wild Horse Sanctuary's wild horses See HORSE, page 7A A Los Angeles man was arrested Thursday just north of Orland on Interstate 5 when he was stopped with about 30 kilograms of cocaine worth about $3 million. The Glenn Interagency Narcotics Task Force in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle traveling north on I-5 for vehicle violations, according to an agency press release issued Tuesday. Searching the vehicle, officers found the cocaine. The driver, Andres Guzman age 27 of Los Angeles, was arrested and booked into the Glenn County Jail. The Drug Enforcement Agency assisted in the investigation and subsequently took Guzman into custody on federal charges. He is being held without bail. DN Staff Writer Red Bluff 9-year-old Chrissy Stevens won the 2013 Miss Heart of the Capital City pageant with her eyes, personality and 100 cans of food. As part of the entry fee to the pageant, one of the regional steps for Miss Heart of the USA, entrants needed to collect 10 cans of food to help the needy. Stevens went door-todoor to her neighbors' homes, collecting 100 cans by the time she was done. She then headed to Rancho Cordova on July 28 where she won the titles of Prettiest Eyes, Prettiest Hair, Best Smile, Best Personality and Best Stage Presence for her 8-10 Petite Miss age division. But those weren't the only titles the soon-tobe fourth-grader at Metteer Elementary took away.
