3 | SIGMA CHI Scott Hawkins '77 joined Sigma Chi with his high school friend Dan DeCubellis '77 and quickly learned to appreciate Sigma Chi for its values. "e Jordan Standard resonated with me, reflecting values that I had been raised with, and I was comfortable endeavoring to live it out." "I was focused on being a good student. Sigma Chi seemed to have an interesting mixture of brothers from different regions and backgrounds. I would characterize the group as 'all-American' and representing future community leaders— not all jocks, not all academics, but balanced, motivated, optimistic, and capable." Strengthening His Skills Scott was fortunate to have several leadership experiences as an undergraduate that helped shape him. He was tapped to become recruitment chairman in the spring of his freshman year—which was a huge boost and put him in the middle of leadership discussions the following year. ereaer, he was elected pro consul and ultimately consul. "e brotherhood was extremely supportive." As a senior, Scott was nominated to win the Province Balfour Award. Later as an alumnus, he was recognized for his professional success as a Significant Sig inductee in 2017. "Seeing the importance of the Sigma Chi values to the older brothers in attendance at Grand Chapter was impactful and made me appreciate how fortunate I was to be part of Sigma Chi." Putting Them to Good Use Sigma Chi directly impacted Scott's career development. "It was a laboratory for me to learn more about being a leader." His close mentor, Robert Lindgren '73, influenced Scott to pursue an international academic scholarship following law school. Robert, who is now President of Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, and the two brothers remain close to this day. Aer earning an MBA from the University of Edinburgh, Scott joined Jones Foster PA, where he has practiced his entire career and is currently vice chairman. "I served in leadership roles, including president of e Florida Bar, chairman of Palm Beach Atlantic University, and later chairman of the University of Florida Foundation." Helping to Strengthen the Brotherhood Attending occasional reunions, supporting financially, and mentoring young men interested in the fraternity are all ways in which Scott enjoys giving back. "As I consider how fortunate I have been, I realize that the friendships formed in the fraternity and the opportunities it presented have had a profound impact in my life. It's hard to imagine my life without that experience." Scott is supportive of the campaign and hopes to see Sigma Chi thrive. "e opportunity to invest in enterprises that help to develop leaders is rare, and this campaign is particularly important to me. My gi was given with gratitude for the valuable lessons and friendships Sigma Chi brought into my life."
