1 HONORING THE PAST, BUILDING FOR THE NEXT CENTURY Dear Alumni of Illinois Chapter, During my 16 years as president of the University of Illinois, I learned a great deal about how students grow and mature, including Greek life. In the process, and with the skillful hand of a treasured friend, Arnold Beckman, I became a DU myself. All of that taught me something about the impact of Greek life on students. DU can instill a special degree of commitment and loyalty in the lives of engaged and faithful alumni. Universities like Illinois are often large and difficult to navigate. Greek life offers a home, a sense of belonging, and an environment to grow toward a productive life of service to society. I am proud to see DU make such an impressive mark on campus with this project. My congratulations to the Alumni Board on the planning and decision to renovate this historic home. I appreciated the leadership Illinois Chapter undergraduates provided the University during my tenure as president and the engagement and support they continue to provide through the current day. This campaign launches an important investment in DU as well as this storied Greek system. The decision to provide an excellent living and social environment with first-rate study and meeting accommodations will enhance the overall university experience for our undergraduates. A strong university depends on strong, talented undergraduates and engaged and supportive alumni. Support of this capital campaign will help ensure that tradition continues. Best wishes for much continued success. Sincerely, Stan Ikenberry President, 1979-95; 2009-10
