Y oung men join fraternities because of the bonds they form with the brothers they meet, brothers who help them feel at home. Lambda Chi Alpha made Bob Kerns AH545 feel like he'd returned home after a long absence—not arrived as a newcomer. "We felt like old friends, not new acquaintances," he said. Lambda Chi showed Bob fun, friendship, and growth. The memories made with his pledge class were some of the most fun he had in college. Lessons in leadership and organization taught him confidence, leaving no room for the shyness he once felt. "None of my old high school friends would ever believe I became a fraternity social chairman!" As Bob grew through the years, so too have Alpha Eta Zeta and the OSU campus at large. Bob is particularly proud of the new Chapter House, the brothers living there, and the alumni support that made it possible. "What a long way the Chapter has come from the old Chapter House on Hester Street to what we have now," he said. "It's important to support the Chapter by funding future improvements and setting an example for future alumni." Bob's personal and professional growth didn't end upon graduating; in fact, Lambda Chi and OSU gave him more opportunities for both! Bob works in the paving business, and his company has worked with the university on multiple projects—literally shaping the beautiful campus we see today. When Zeta's previous house risked closure as a fire hazard, Bob worked with the city to identify the problems. He then worked with his banker to secure a loan and ultimately helped the house get a new contract to make the needed changes. To Bob, this also speaks to the importance of alumni support (and only cost him a little time). "Much of my growth is due to all the wonderful growth at Lambda Chi and OSU," Bob said. "I'm proud to have had a hand in it, and it was a fun and rewarding thing to do." Today, Bob is happy to see the good work that brothers continue to do on campus and in the community, such as helping the elderly with their yards and housework. He hopes alumni will remain engaged with the Chapter and its new house—and with one another. "Everybody needs to take a little time and stay connected with the friends you made in the fraternity," he said. "Seeing them again is something I always enjoy." Bob lives in Stillwater and can be reached at bob@rokerns.com. PAGE 3 W hat turned you into a fraternity man? Was it the drive to join a brotherhood of similar values or possibly a positive experience with members on campus? For Alex Campbell AH1777, it was the exceptional recruitment skills of Reid Schindler AH1714. "I had no interest in joining a fraternity," Alex mentioned. "Credit to Reid and his persistence; he's a hell of a salesman and convinced me that joining LXA was the right move." LIFE WITH LAMBDA As a sophomore, Alex was Epsilon of Alpha Eta, and he served as Sigma the following year. During his time as Sigma, he officially created the SC study room at the old Chapter House alongside roommate Bryan Stump AH1775. Alex still remembers the great times brothers shared during Work Week, including floating in the river in Tahlequah and preparing the Chapter House for new associates. They would also spend a weekend in cabins with associates before a semester began, bonding as brothers and howling by the fire. FROM D.C. TO DALLAS Following his years at OSU, Alex attended law school and prepared for a career as an international lawyer. "I moved to D.C. for about a year and a half, working for the state department on foreign policy and international relations," he said. Alex was proud to oversee a public-private partnership to promote high school students' interest in STEM fields. He managed a team of individuals from the U.S. government, Intel, NASA, and Google, and the partnership hosted a three-week camp for 100 high school girls from the U.S. and Africa. The students had a unique opportunity to learn about technology, including building microscopes from their cell phones. While Alex enjoyed his experience in D.C., he eventually found his true calling. "After my time in the state department, I knew it was time to return to Dallas and pursue my passion. While I enjoyed practicing law, nothing sparked my passion like sports, namely football, so being an agent seemed like a no brainer." Alex became a certified agent by the NFL Players Association, eventually starting an agency while still working with a law firm in the DFW area. His first client, a football player from Houston Baptist University, was the school's first to reach the NFL. "It was incredibly rewarding to use my talents to help him pursue his dream." MAKING CONNECTIONS Though he recognizes how tough the sports agency industry can be to break into, Alex urges undergraduates to follow their dreams. "If you are not 100% in, then you will not last," he shared. "Networking is critical. Begin building your network now; you never know who you'll know down the road that will be willing to help." Just as networking is crucial to Alex's career, it has also kept him connected with Alpha Eta brothers on a personal level. He has stayed in touch with alumni brothers nearby in Dallas, and one pledge brother was even Alex's best man at his wedding. "It's been years since I've been to Stillwater," he said, "but I hope to make it up for a game this year!" Alex married his wife in July 2021, and they both stay busy with work and travel. Due to the nature of his career, Alex enjoys attending multiple football games each season. On his rare off weekend, he enjoys spending time on the golf course.
