A TIME TO RECONNECT Brothers Make Lasting Memories at Alumni Night ΣΦΕ EARTBEA H T UNIVERSITY OF OREGON s SIGMA PHI EPSILON Oregon Beta FALL 2022 BIG NEWS SigEp Headquarters and the University of Oregon have given approval for Oregon Beta to return to campus in fall 2023! L ike most of you, the Fraternity was the most important and formative experience I had before vaulting out into the "real world." We always love to hear your stories about the Fraternity, so please always feel free to share! Brian Stewart '82 and I enrolled at the University of Oregon in Fall 1978 and signed up for "Rush" that spring. It was the year after "Animal House" was filmed on campus, and many of those kinds of hijinks were apparent throughout the Greek community, but something else started to come across to me as well… some impressive role models that I could look up to, like Brian Dunlap '81. Brian effectively got across to us what SigEp was all about. Fun, yes, but also taking academics seriously, learning to work as a team, and ultimately becoming a Balanced Man well prepared for post-college life. For me, living at 1000 Alder Street gave me three great and important years. I learned to value teamwork with a group of young men who were running their own organization, managing their own house and finances, and recruiting their future brothers. It was a real experience in leadership, tough decision making, problem solving, and working effectively with others. Those experiences led me to the unique opportunity to work for the National Fraternity as a Regional Director, which in turn, opened the door to a career with Procter and Gamble. Without a doubt, SigEp was the most important developmental experience in my life, and I owe so much to it. I have heard from many of you who feel the same way. We can give back by providing that same opportunity to the young men who today are enrolled at the University of Oregon. It seems to me that never before has it been so important for us to develop Balanced Men and strong leaders for the future. Returning to Campus When we return to campus, SigEp HQ will dedicate an expansion team in the summer to help recruit our new founding members. The plan will be to have this initial group function without living in a house (this is standard practice for new SigEp colony chapters working toward their charter) while we continue to lease 1000 Alder Street to build up our financial standing. Renovate to Remain Competitive We continue to debate and consider a renovation versus buying/building a new Chapter facility. As discussed before, the house needs significant work: surfaces are badly worn, amenities are not competitive, and a more modern "living and learning" community will be necessary to recruit the type of men we want at Oregon Beta. Mike Sullivan '84 has been putting in considerable effort moving this project forward, and we have hired a consulting architect to generate initial plans that we will share broadly with you soon. We Need YOUR Help! We will need to rally as alumni to make this a reality. We have the opportunity to recharter SigEp at the University of Oregon and put it on the right track to becoming the top Fraternity on campus, one recognized year after year as an institution of prestige and honor. It will not come easy and will take active fundraising and volunteerism to reach this goal. Look for our spring newsletter, where we will begin to detail the specific help that will be needed, but you can get involved now. We now offer a Zoom option for all our AVC quarterly meetings, and we would love for you to join us. Please contact me at the email below if you would like to receive notifications and virtual meeting invites or if you have any other questions, comments, or suggestions. "Proud to be a SigEp!" Fraternally, Todd Ruberg '82 ruberg1@yahoo.com I n early June, over two dozen Portland-area SigEp alumni gathered at the Buffalo Gap Saloon to rekindle friendship and learn more about the current happenings at Oregon Beta. It was a great time to hear stories of how it used to be and to learn more about where we are heading in the future. Watch for future alumni gatherings or let us know if you are interested in coordinating an event in your area - Contact Alumni Relations at brian.stewart3@comcast.net!
