There are more than 5,000 local veterans who have served and still serve in the Armed Forces. These veterans deserve our thanks and our recognition for serving our country and for making sure the freedoms we have in America remain. Today (Thursday) at two different times there is a Veterans Day celebration at the Forest City Clubhouse. Times are 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by The African American Heritage Museum of Rutherford County in memory of Theratha Bennings, who was always diligent about recognizing our veterans. All veterans are encouraged to attend the day of festivities. There will also be a historical presentation, entertainment and refreshments will be served. All veterans and the general public are invited to attend. Admissions free. Tomorrow morning (Friday) all veterans are invited to a free buffet breakfast and a program on the Lakeview Terrace at Rumbling Bald in Lake Lure. And as in the past the Christopher Ebert Marine Corps League in Forest City is hosting the annual Veterans Day golf tournament. All proceeds from the tournament will go to assist needy veterans in Rutherford County. Just as with the Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots program, all money stays in Rutherford County. Each day as we run errands, go to work, school or community and church events, we come in contact with veterans. I love it when our veterans wear a cap that lets me know they are a veteran. We can never say thanks enough for their sacrifi ces and service. Whatever Veterans Day means to you, show respect to those who have served. For that veteran in your life, express special thanks today. Maybe there is something we all can do for them today - cook a favorite dish, rake a yard or most of all, take time to listen. One of my favorite days as a reporter was in 2006 when I joined several veterans who were fl own to Washington, DC on three private planes by pilots here in Rutherford County. We spent the day with the veterans, stopping at numerous war memorials. At that time they were all World War II veterans and we visited the new World War II Memorial that had been built in their honor. The Blue Ridge Honor Flight in Asheville recently took a number of veterans from Western North Carolina to Washington, DC. Several Rutherford County veterans were among those on the trip. The group plans another Honor Flight on April 29, 2023. If you are a veteran or would like to go, visit www. BlueRidgeHonorFlight. com and begin the application process. Blue Ridge Honor Flight began in 2005 as a dream and since then more than 200,000 veterans have been fl own to DC to view memorials in their honor.
