The WISE OLD OWL Epsilon Kappa ChaptEr of sigma Chi fratErnity at thE UnivErsity of mEmphis Fall 2022 FEATURES: Developing Tomorrow's Leaders - 2 • Alumni Spotlight - 2 • Above and Beyond - 3 Sigma Chi's Success Continues Our Fraternity Grows Stronger G reetings from the Memphis Sigma Chi House Corporation! This is our first newsletter since the pandemic began, and all of us are thrilled that we are getting back to some semblance of normalcy. Epsilon Kappa Chapter dealt with a couple of instances where brothers living in the Chapter House either contracted or were exposed to COVID. Sigma Chi's International Headquarters provided helpful suggestions and protocols for how to deal with these issues, and our undergraduate Chapter leaders did a good job of quarantining and disinfecting the Chapter House. While we are hopeful that these outbreaks have now abated, we maintain our readiness to deal with future problems. Despite the many challenges caused by COVID, Sigma Chi continues to thrive. With over 360,000 initiates and 244 Chapters, we are the second-largest fraternity. Fourteen colonies are petitioning for membership, and we have the most alumni Chapters for any fraternity with 152. The number of young men pledging Sigma Chi has risen substantially since fall 2020, and we expect that trend to continue. Lastly, I want to take a moment to remember one of our beloved alumni, Mike Richmond '68. Mike entered Chapter Eternal in October 2021. Many alumni attended his funeral, and a White Rose ceremony was performed at his request. Sigma Chi had a very large impact on Mike's life. Mike served on the House Corporation Board of Directors for many years. He devoted his time, talents, and money to support Epsilon Kappa and wanted no recognition for his deeds. Our Chapter, and our fraternity as a whole, are better today because of Mike. He will be sorely missed. In Hoc, Kirk Caraway '94 President, Memphis Sigma Chi House Group Inc. kcaraway@allensummers.com Keeping Our Momentum A L U M N I A S S O C I A T I O N O P P O R T U N I T I E S W ith the dark days of COVID hopefully behind us, we were able to commence social gatherings and strengthen our ties of brotherhood this past January. Meeting in the quaint eatery of Pete and Sam's, a band of nearly 30 brothers gathered for our annual meeting. While installation of officers occurred at this meeting, the main focus was presenting awards to several alumni for their lifelong dedication to Sigma Chi. Please mark your calendars for two significant upcoming events. The first is our Homecoming Social, which will be held at RP Tracks from 6-9 p.m. on November 4. Feel free to bring your significant other. Our annual Toy Drive and Christmas Party is planned at Central BBQ on Summer Avenue from 6-8 p.m. on December 1. Please visit our website at midsouthsigs.com to RSVP for both. As always, we need your help to keep the momentum going and to make sure our fellow brothers are taking advantage of the community we have been building over the years. Our dues are only $25 per year, and you can join by visiting our website. In addition, we always need help creating awareness about the Chapter. We are focused on bringing Sigma Chi alumni together from all over the MidSouth, regardless of undergraduate Chapter. Finally, we want to encourage you to participate and volunteer. By attending events, giving feedback, and being willing to serve, we can do some amazing things throughout the MidSouth. 2023 will be here before we know it, and we are looking for fresh faces to fill positions on our board. If you have questions, you can reach me or our leadership team at midsouthsigs@gmail.com or through our website. We would love to talk to you about membership and how we can help you get involved.
