Empowering Our Communities PI PHI INSTILLS THE VALUE OF SERVICE Angel UPDATE M I N N E S O T A A L P H A C H A P T E R UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA | FALL 2022 P i Beta Phi sisters are united by a set of core values, including our mission "to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service." Service is inherently linked to the core tenets of our sisterhood, and we all strive to serve our communities throughout our lives. At Minnesota Alpha, we proudly uphold Philanthropic Service to Others as one of our six core values—throughout our time as both collegians and alumnae. Our commitment to service is widespread, and we aim to give back to our community in ways that fit its specific needs. Members of Minnesota Alpha continually engage with our core value of Philanthropic Service to Others. Our members pride themselves on serving in a variety of roles to positively impact those around us. Chapter members help teach adults English, assist healthcare workers, aid high schoolers with their future collegiate plans, play sports with children who have disabilities, lead student panels and much more. Serving others brings us together and forms a strong connection amongst our sisters. Pi Phi also has a special commitment to literacy—a cause our Fraternity has been dedicated to for more than 110 years. Read > Lead > Achieve ® , Pi Phi's philanthropic effort, inspires a lifelong love of reading that can unlock true potential, creating a more literate and productive society. Every September, Pi Phi celebrates Read > Lead > Achieve Month. Chapters, alumnae clubs and Pi Phi sisters spend the month sharing their passion for literacy through projects and initiatives in their communities. This includes hosting local events, improving access to literacy education and advocating for the importance of fostering a lifelong love of reading. Our chapter members work to create a more literate society, as we believe every child deserves this opportunity. An eye-opening experience allowed me to demonstrate my commitment to Pi Phi when I spent time teaching two young girls how to read. Initially, the two feared reading and viewed it as a challenge rather than practice. Day by day, we worked to increase the number of books we could read, ultimately reading as many as 10 books per day. This experience embodies how important it is to teach our youth literacy skills. It was not only recognizable how both children were stronger readers, but the most rewarding feeling was the drastic increase in their confidence. Learning how to read is an integral part of an individual's childhood, and I am incredibly grateful to instill the value of literacy at a young age for those in my community. Minnesota Alpha believes service and literacy are the keys to a brighter, more compassionate world. When we lift those around us, they become empowered to uplift others as well. As a new term begins here at the University of Minnesota, we can't wait to show you how Minnesota Alpha is making Pi Beta Phi's mission a reality.
