CHI OMEGA 5 Omega Chapter Virginia "Louis" Mahoney Hopkins '68 – February 20, 2022 Alumnae Updates Jo Ann Griffin Von Wald '51 is 93 and still kicking. She lives in Hemet, Calif., in the same mobile home park as her son, who takes good care of her every need. Jo Ann enjoys playing Mexican Train, bridge, and various games on her computer. "Chapel Hill still lives in my heart. Cheering all their games on. Are any of my sisters still alive? Would love to hear from them. Go Tar Heels!" Her husband of 59 years, Robert, passed away in 2020. Martha is preparing to retire from real estate after 36 good years. Email: macienich@gmail.com Hannah Kirby Priestley '58 and her husband have received their second COVID-19 booster shots and are doing their best to stay protected against the virus (masking voluntarily in crowds and stores, etc.). Hannah is thankful to be healthy and active, walking at least two miles each day. Her book group and poetry group keep her engaged with friends. "My husband is 90 and has mobility challenges, so we're very grateful for Acorn TV and Netflix!" Hannah lives in Carmel, Calif. Lou Chapman Hoffman '61 wrote a book about her ancestor whose papers are in the archives at UNC Chapel Hill. It's called Catherine: The Pritchard Papers, 1829- 1899. Lou lives in New Orleans, La. She's passionate about advocating literacy through the Daughters of the American Revolution and the schools they support (four nationwide). She also loves watching her two grandkids grow; they're big UNC fans! Betsy lives in Asheboro, N.C. Mary-Brent Smith Wright '70 and pledge sister Martha Kincheloe '70 were so excited for their 50th reunion plans—only for COVID-19 to arrive and change everything. Mary-Brent hopes her class can plan another event sometime soon. She enjoys seeing Martha Taylor Stukes '70 and Yvonne M. Rayburn '70 in the summer at Figure Eight. Mary-Brent lives in Raleigh, N.C. Carroll was recently honored in the Marquis Who's Who in Education. She enjoys equestrian sports and riding her grey Quarter Horse. Her husband, Frank, is a chemistry professor in the University of Maryland system. They're celebrating their 50th anniversary in October, and they have three grown children and four grandchildren. In 1995, she was blessed by the Dalai Lama at a small, private reception. Then she accompanied the Carlos Museum director and board chairman to Egypt in October 2003 to return the missing remains of Pharaoh Ramses I mummy to the Cairo Museum. Joanne also met and chatted with then-Prince Charles (now King Charles III) at a small luncheon he hosted in 2010 on his Duchy of Cornwall estate; he later held a tour of his new 400-acre purpose-built town, Poundbury. She even attended President George H.W. Bush's 80th birthday party in June 2004 in Houston, Texas. Joanne lives in Atlanta, Ga. Nancy Long Hutchison '73 and her husband, Fred, live in Raleigh, N.C. They enjoy spending time with their three granddaughters; two live across the street and one lives in San Francisco. Fred and Nancy like to take bike trips in the U.S. and abroad. Nancy also loves working in her yard, doing jigsaw puzzles, sewing pillows for daughters, and cooking. Her husband and brother have both worked there for eight years. Her brother-in-law and nephew are both UNC alumni and lawyers, and one more nephew is a UNC alumnus as well. Her oldest daughter, Margaret, is studying at Georgetown U and hopes to get into medical school. Her son, John Troup, works in D.C., following in her footsteps. Ducky lives in Montross, Va. They have three children: Buck (at UChicago) and Cooper Jr. and Owen (both at North Spring High School, where Kelly teaches social studies). She is on the leadership team for the Sandwich Project and is a project coordinator for the NSHS #MyFreedomDay community service project. Kelly has two bulldogs, Roxx and Dee, and is a member at Mt.
