Carolina's 127th annual commencement, held on June 14, 1922, included a 25th anniversary celebration of the first admission of UNC's female students. UNC's Board of Trustees had opened the university to women for postgraduate studies in 1898. From that point, the '20s were a tremendous time of growth in which women integrated into Carolina's university life. In January 1923, a group of women received a receipt of approval from UNC's chancellor and Chi Omega's national office to establish a sorority chapter at the university. This gave Chi Omega the honor of becoming UNC's first sorority. Pi Beta Phi established their recognition several months later. The two UNC sororities began their spirited acceptance of new memberships with the first "rush," now called "recruitment," in October 1923. UNC has been supportive of the development of a strong sorority system ever since that exciting time. The sororities that followed included Alpha Delta Pi in 1939, Delta Delta Delta in 1943, and Kappa Delta in 1951. 2023 marks the tremendous achievement of Chi Omega's 100th year on UNC's campus. This exciting accomplishment has been attained by decades of devotion by our Epsilon Beta alumnae, spectacular housemothers (now called house directors), Epsilon Beta employees, and Chi Omega volunteers from Chapters throughout our nation. Our Epsilon Beta Chapter has passionately upheld our legacy at UNC, and we look forward to doing so for another century. Epsilon Beta alumnae will "ring in" our 100th year with a centennial celebration during the weekend of November 3-4, 2023. The festivities will include a Friday evening gathering at the Carolina Inn, a Saturday football game, and tours of our Chapter House throughout the weekend. Our fabulous Centennial Celebration chairs are Elizabeth Mitchener Daniel '82, Lisa Gunn Beasley '82, and Julie Hawks Edge '82. Please be on the lookout for your centennial celebration details to follow in an email soon! Cheers to 100 years and many more!
