Willis, Culliver among those injured at 49ers camp SANTA CLARA (AP) — Injuries are suddenly piling up fast for the San Francisco 49ers in training camp. All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis was wearing a black cast around the base of his right hand and wrist and was among more than a dozen players not participating in practice Thursday. Barely 45 minutes into the workout, trainers carted cornerback Chris Culliver off the field with an apparent left knee injury. Willis injured his hand during one-on-one blocking drills Wednesday. He stood on the sidelines the rest of practice with his wrist and hand heavily wrapped along with fellow All-Pro middle linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who has been nursing a hip injury. Culliver's injury appeared even more serious. He was covering a punt in a non-contact drill when he went down in pain, holding his left knee and burying his head in his hands. Coach Jim Harbaugh and players looked on as trainers attended to Culliver. General manager Trent Baalke consoled Culliver by putting his arm around the cornerback before he was carted off the field. The injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for the 49ers this offseason. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joaquin Arias and pinchhitter Roger Kieschnick had RBI singles off Jonathan Papelbon in the top of the ninth inning, then Sergio Romo escaped a basesloaded jam in the bottom half as the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 Thursday night. Matt Cain (7-6) gave up one run and six hits in eight innings. The struggling ace lowered his ERA to 4.57. Cole Hamels allowed seven hits and struck out five in eight scoreless innings. The 2008 World Series MVP hasn't pitched like a three-time All-Star this season, but he left with a 1-0 lead that he gave himself with an RBI single. Then Papelbon (2-1) blew it — a familiar scene for the 2012 All-Star closer. He started the season 13 for 13 in save opportunities, but is 7 for 13 since. He heard loud boos throughout the inning and when he walked to the dugout. Hunter Pence led off the ninth with an infield single and advanced to third on Brett Pill's single to right. Kieschnick followed with a tying single that sent Pill to third, and Arias grounded his go-ahead hit to left. Romo loaded the bases with no outs before finishing for his 25th save in 29 tries. Pinch-hitter Delmon Young reached on third baseman Pablo Sandoval's error to start the bottom of the ninth. Cody Asche then tried to sacrifice, but Romo fielded it and slipped so the rookie got credit for his major league hit. John Mayberry Jr. was hit by a pitch while trying to sacrifice to load the bases. After Laynce Nix flied to shallow right, Carlos Ruiz flied to shallow left. The defending World Series champion Giants took two of three, but remain last in the NL West. The Phillies are 2-10 since the All-Star break and have dropped to 9 1/2 games behind Cincinnati for the second wild-card spot in the NL. Cain retired the first 11 batters, striking out five, before Chase Utley lined a single in the fourth. Nix hit a broken-bat sin- gle with two outs in the fifth and Ruiz followed with a single. Hamels then sliced an RBI single down the leftfield line for a 1-0 lead. The Phillies missed a chance to add runs in the seventh and eighth. Michael Martinez was thrown out by left fielder Jeff Francoeur trying to score from second on Mayberry's single in the seventh. After Jimmy Rollins tripled in the eighth, he was thrown out trying to score on Michael Young's grounder to shortstop. Last July, the Phillies gave Hamels a six-year, $144 million extension to pass up free agency. But they're just 6-17 in his starts. NOTES: Sandoval was in the lineup for the Giants after leaving Wednesday night's game with a right heel bruise. ... Former Phillies closer Brad Lidge threw out the first pitch. Lidge, who was 48 for 48 in save chances during Philadelphia's 2008 World Series championship season, formally retired as a member of the Phillies. ... Madison Bumgarner (10-6) starts for the Giants at Tampa Bay on Friday night. ... Former ace Curt Schilling will be inducted into the Phillies' Wall of Fame on Friday. ... RHP Ethan Martin will make his major league debut for the Phillies on Friday night against Atlanta's Kris Medlen (7-10). RAIDERS New-look defense gets on same page NAPA (AP) — The Oakland Raiders probably should wear name tags in the defensive huddle in training camp. With nine projected starters coming from outside the organization, getting on the same page is the top priority this summer. Coach Dennis Allen and coordinator Jason Tarver are placing a premium on communication to make sure that when the season starts everybody is lined up in the proper place and sticking to their roles to avoid the defensive breakdowns that too often doomed the Raiders a year ago. At the center of it all is middle linebacker Nick Roach. The Raiders signed Roach as a free agent from Chicago to replace disappointing former first-round pick Rolando McClain, whose deficiencies were often at the center of Oakland's defensive struggles. "That dude is brilliant," safety Tyvon Branch said of the Raiders' new defensive signal caller. "He picks up everything quick. There's no curveballs with that guy. He gets everything the first time around. He's a very intelligent player. He really takes command of the huddle. He gets guys lined up. ... It definitely helps when you have a guy like him out there orchestrating everything." It's not an easy job considering the varied backgrounds of this group of defenders. Some are coming from teams that played AP file photo Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver during a June practice. three-man fronts while others are more used to the four-man defensive lines the Raiders typically use. Some are from teams that played more passive zones while others are accustomed to defenses that blitz more often. So along with learning a new defense, the Raiders need to learn about their new teammates since Branch and defensive end Lamarr Houston are the only starters who played together last year. "It's crazy. That's just the game now," said reserve defensive end Andre Carter, who is one of the few returning players on this defense. "It will be about communication and jelling. I have this guy next to me. I have to understand how he works and how his mechan- ics are so I can help him and he can help me. You have to communicate and work off each other." Carter said getting to that point takes constant work from the meeting room to the practice field and even the lunch room, where a quick question about how a player approaches a certain situation can avoid a communication breakdown on the field. Allen said he's seen the results from the focus on communication through the first week of camp even if he knows there will always be some breakdowns no matter how familiar a team is. "I think as these guys continue to get a feel for each other, continue to hang out here, continue to talk, continue to go in the meet- ings and understand exactly what we're trying to get done, I think the communication is going to continue to get better," he said. "The positive thing is, they understand the importance of it, they want to be good, and they're working extremely hard to get that done." Of the 11 projected starters at this point, only Branch and Houston were with Oakland a year ago. None of the other nine has played an NFL game with each other. Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly and defensive back Michael Huff were cut in moves to create salary-cap space. McClain was let go after three ineffective seasons and clashes with the coaching staff. Defensive linemen Desmond Bryant and Matt Shaughnessy and linebacker Philip Wheeler got free-agent contracts with other teams, and the Raiders had no interest in bringing back defensive tackle Richard Seymour and safety Matt Giordano. Linebacker Miles Burris is recovering from offseason knee surgery and is unlikely to regain his starting job. In their place, the Raiders signed a pair of free agent defensive tackles in Pat Sims and Vance Walker; defensive end Jason Hunter; linebackers Roach, Kevin Burnett and Kaluka Maiava; cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins; and safeties Charles Woodson and Usama Young. Oakland used a first-round pick on cornerback D.J. Hayden and a third-rounder on linebacker Sio Moore. There was plenty of good reason for the overhaul after the Raiders allowed the most points per game (27.7) for the franchise since 1961, a franchise-worst 66 percent completion rate, and tied a franchise low with 25 sacks. The Raiders are optimistic those numbers will improve drastically this season. "I think we're going to be a fast-flowing defense," Woodson said. "I think that if you can have that on any team, a team that's willing to sell out every play and get to the ball, you're going to be in ballgames."
