3 COLORADO DELTA FRATERNALLY FOCUSED Why Dennis Chin Devotes Time to SigEp, and Why You Should Too T he spirit of brotherhood goes far beyond the Chapter a brother joins as an undergraduate. While Dennis Chin, Cal Poly '95 first became a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Cal Poly, he remains connected to the brotherhood through a crucial volunteer role with Colorado Delta Chapter. While at Conclave, Dennis and a few of his fellow Chapter members met the Colorado Delta brothers in attendance. "We became good friends with them," Dennis said. "My guys and I ended up staying at the Chapter House for a few days before and after the Conclave. That's how it got started, and when I moved to Colorado in November of last year, I decided to volunteer to help on the AVC." Dennis has been instrumental in multiple projects to improve the Colorado Delta Chapter House. "I had a really good experience as an undergraduate in SigEp and as a graduate student at Berkeley because I was a resident scholar, so I wanted to give back to SigEp," Dennis explained. "I've now been giving back pretty much since I graduated college, even though I knew I was busy with starting work. I just wanted undergraduates to be able to have as good of an experience as I had." Living in Colorado, Dennis is fortunate to be able to visit and check up on the Chapter House. Along with his AVC position for Colorado Delta, he also serves as Chapter Counselor for UC Irvine. With so many SigEp connections, it's no surprise that his volunteer activity is recognized throughout the Fraternity. Dennis recalled a fellow SigEp telling him about a chance encounter at the airport between two brothers from separate Chapters and hearing the praise, "Oh yeah, we love Dennis!" Though the work can sometimes be tough, including a period of just Zoom calls with Chapter members due to the COVID pandemic, Dennis always appreciates knowing that his work is making a difference. "Some guys graduate and are just done, you know? It's a very small percentage of volunteers that come back to help SigEp; it's probably less than 3% for sure." Whether he's working on housing projects with Colorado Delta or counseling undergraduates at UC Irvine, Dennis always has the future of the Fraternity in mind. You can connect with him at dennis.chin@gmail.com to learn more about getting involved with volunteer work.
