8A – Daily News – Saturday, August 14, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship More heeding the call to priesthood at seminary WALNUT CREEK (MCT) — From a young age, Juan Alejo has aspired to live a priest's life. "Since I was a kid, I heard this call," said Alejo. Now the 35-year-old, who is heeding that summons by attending St. Patrick's Seminary & University in Menlo Park is among a growing number of men flocking to seminaries in recent years to become Roman Catholic priests. That growth is prompting the school to plan for a major campus expansion that could cost up to $50 million. The increase in seminarians at St. Patrick's reflects an uptick in their numbers nationwide after decades of enroll- ment declines. The number of men interested in joining the priesthood is rising despite highly publicized cases of sexu- al abuse by priests. "It's a national thing we're experiencing," the Rev. James McKearney, St. Patrick's president, said of the upward trend in those pursuing priesthood. "There's been a lot of anxiety in light of the fact that the church has been getting a lot of bad press," McKearney said, "but the vast majority of priests are good men. (St. Patrick's seminarians) want to be good priests as opposed to those who haven't lived their vows. They are not dissuaded by the bad press." In the coming academic year, St. Patrick's is expected to have more than 100 seminarians following a steady rise since 2006 when it served 88 students. The projected enroll- ment includes 34 new students, according to the school. "We haven't seen that in many years," McKearney said. "It's an exciting time." Mary Verducci, St. Patrick's project manager for institu- tional advancement, partly attributed that population surge to a growing confidence in the seminary's Sulpician approach to priestly ordination. That approach includes participation in daily prayers and other spiritual exercises. Seminarians are also drawn to the school's high academ- ic standards and multicultural student body, Verducci said. "Right now, we're at maximum capacity," she said. All the seminarians live on campus, she said, and school leaders hope to launch a capital fundraising campaign soon to accommodate the increased enrollment. One option is to build a two-story housing complex cost- ing about $50 million, she said. An alternative is to renovate an existing building for about $15 million. Other seminaries across the country are experiencing similar growth and need to expand, said the Rev. Shawn McKnight, executive director of the secretariat of clergy, consecrated life and vocations for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C. "There was a sharp decline in men going into the priest- hood 15 years ago," McKnight said. "That seems to be com- ing back." According to a report from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate in Washington, D.C., the enroll- ment at college seminaries numbered 1,443 in 2009-10 — up from a low of 1,248 in 2004-05. The church's recruitment efforts in communities and parishes that encourage young men to consider priesthood have helped boost enrollment, McKnight said. "They are hearing that and feel more comfortable in answering the call," he said. Alejo was partly inspired by his older brother, who has taken the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. But Alejo has always been a spiritual person and discov- ered for himself his true vocation, he said. "I feel I would like to serve people, especially the poor," he said. "It's in the heart that we answer God's call." Provision The love of God provides provision for every area of our lives. There isn’t a moment in any day that God is not aware of the needs of humanity, and our individual lives. He loves us, not from far away, for He is as close as our next breath. God is not a distant force, but He is our Father God, and He loves each of us personally. I’m a happy woman, regardless of the fact that doctors think uterine can- cer is killing me. Why should I be unhappy? My God meets every need, every day, one day at a time. I am loved by the One who has created all. My healing has been paid for, more than 2,000 years ago. Salvation and healing are received by faith. The Holy Spirit made this real to me, by explain- ing that I have received the fact that I am saved, even if there are times when I do not feel saved. Feelings are just feelings, not fact. The Word of God presents fact. When we pray for heal- ing, we must also receive the healing, by faith, and not look at symptoms or feeling. This can only be accom- plished, through believing faith, in what Jesus completed upon the cross. I have never doubted my salvation, regardless of how I was feeling, at any particular time. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1:12,13 NAS) I do not doubt my healing, for God’s Word provides many promises on the subject. (See 1 Peter 2:4 and Isaiah 53: Now, can we talk about you? What makes you happy? Eventually most peo- ple find that "stuff," populari- ty, money, and relationships, and health can fail us. New career opportunities, vaca- tion, and whatever "turns you on," can all end, one day. But, remember, the Lord has made provision for "a way out," and He holds the answer for any trial or temptation. (See 1 Corinthians 10:13) being totally sincere, with a heart that seeks God, not for what we can get out of Him, but with a heart that desires to live for Him. When we truly want to please the Lord, we will make the effort to find out what pleases Him, and then do it. J. Marilyn Adams GodTalk We may feel defeated, but we do not have to remain in that state of mind. Once again, we can turn to God’s Word. There are promises of God for each circumstance in life. I often tell my friends, "It’s like eating the whole enchilada." Know the Bible so well, that you are not just "feeding" on parts of scripture. There is One that never changes. Knowing God brings new life, while here and for all eternity. But, to really know Him, we need to come into a love relationship with Him. That takes Four teachers and seven other workers at a Southern California reli- gious school have been fired because of differ- ences in biblical inter- pretation and incompati- ble beliefs. Most of the dismissed workers were Roman Catholics whose beliefs conflicted with those of Corona’s conservative evangelical Crossroads Christian Schools, which last year lost its autonomy and came under the umbrella of the 8,000-member Crossroads Christian Church next door. ‘‘To me, it feels like religious cleansing,’’ said the Rev. John Sav- ille of St. John’s Episco- pal Church, where fired elementary teacher Marylou Goodman is a parishioner. The fired employees had been told a year ago of the school’s closer relationship with the church and a require- ment that they attend a ‘‘Bible-belie ving church,’’ meaning born- again. Still, they were dis- tressed. ‘‘I just loved the sense of family, or what I thought was family,’’ said fired kindergarten teacher Sue Fitzgerald, a Catholic who worked at the school for 14 years. School superinten- dent Beth Frobisher said officials took a closer look at the religious The journey with God is totally individual. We can- not glean everything from other Christians, for we must take time to develop our relationship with Jesus Christ, the Messiah. While we need to be in fellowship with Christians, attend a good Bible church, and be active in ministering, we still need our time alone, in the presence of God, and to feed upon His Word. Can we count on God? Will He ever let us down? No. He will never neglect us, for He always cares for us, and faithfully loves us. "Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness." (Psalm 37:3 NAS) Marilyn Adams is leads ministries of prayer and concern for women, including those who are incarcerated. Eleven families pulled their children out of the 583-student Riverside County school because of the firings, Frobisher said. Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California, Irvine Law School, said federal and state laws prohibit reli- gious-belief require- ments in schools, even if Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP — 21080 Luther Rd. — Pastor J.E. The only exception is religious-education classes. ‘‘They cannot dis- criminate in employ- ment based upon reli- gion,’’ he said. But Thomas Cathey, director of legal-legisla- tive issues for the Col- orado-based Association of Christian Schools International, said the school has a religious institution exemption in federal law and has a right to fire employees whose religious beliefs aren’t in sync. Crossroads Christian, which offers classes for students preschool- through-10th grade, is part of the association.
