Not Just Oil, Pennzoil FAST FAST FAST FAST WAY WAY WAY WAY LET US DO YOUR DIRTY WORK! KIDS' CORNER BROUGHT TO YOU BY: It happened just like I remembered it (at least 55 years earlier) as I mowed over a yellow jacket's nest in the ground as I was cutting grass two weeks ago. Near the exact same spot in the front yard where I was cutting grass as a teenager, it happened again. My childhood home is where I live today after moving to Rutherfordton for 25 years and returning. As teenagers, my sisters and I cut the grass and of course with a push mower. That's the way we rolled back in the dark ages. The fi rst time I ran over the yellow jacket's nest was a Saturday, just like two weeks ago. It happened to be my turn to mow the lawn and then it happened as I pushed across the yard. Suddenly and without warning I was covered from head to toe with hundreds of the nasty, irritating and angry yellow jackets, or so it seemed. Screaming for dear life, I made a bee-line inside the house. Daddy later told me he thought I mowed over myself the way I was screaming and when he found out it was just a nest of bees, well he was not happy. I scared him really badly and learned not to scream like that again unless I was in a death trap. It felt like a death trap as mama knocked bees from my head and body as I stood shaking uncontrollably in the house. I escaped with only a couple of stings. That incident created an unpleasant memory. Since that day if I even see a yellow jacket, fear arrives. Two weeks ago I was cutting the front yard with a self-propelled lawn mower going over the same area I'd cut a week some days earlier and didn't disturb any bees. But not this time. First there was one bee sting and then another and another as I tried to fi ght them off. I screamed every time I was stung. My neighbors weren't home. After about the 7th sting, I began to try to get out of my clothes right there in the yard. As I was running into the house, I remember losing part of the clothes. I could have cried but there was no one around to soothe my pain. Instead I began to count the bee stings and there were at least 10. The stings were burning like crazy and I didn't have anything to take the sting out. My sister suggested making a paste with baking soda. I thought she said baking powder and that made the strings worse. It was a good three hours before the burning stopped and I retrieved part of the clothes from the front yard. When dusk came the next night, I suited up and with my gasoline can in my hand I killed those bad bees. It took me a while to dare go back cut the grass there again, but I put on my brave shirt and got the job done There are just some things not worth repeating and running over yellow jackets nests in a yard is defi nitely one I never hope to repeat again.
