Local business owner attends convention Doug Stephens, owner of ServePro of North Shasta, Trinity and Greater Tehama county, recently returned from ServePro's 44th Annual Convention, held June 17-21 at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel and the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim. ServePro, an industry leader in disaster cleanup, restoration and remediation services, welcomed a record number of franchisees to their annual event, offering attendees the most extensive program ever offered at a convention — more than 60 workshop sessions covering more than 30 different topics. This year's keynote speaker was former NBA player Walter Bond. "The variety and quality of this year's educational and business sessions was better than ever," said Stephens. "This Convention is my opportunity to learn about the latest initiatives from ServePro Corporate, and the developing trends in our industry. I know the time I spend in sessions and talking to fellow Franchisees benefits not only my business, but also my community when customers call on us for our services." In addition to providing a networking and educational forum for the more than 1,600 franchise owners, the annual event provides a platform for the company to recognize and reward franchisees for outstanding success in their businesses. For more information, contact Stephens at (530) 222-0200 or sp9908@att.net or visit www.SERVPRO.com. Business leaders need vacations too Last year, a CareerBuilder survey found that more than 80 percent of managers planned to take a summer vacation, and that percentage looks to be similar this year. Unfortunately, that still leaves almost two out of every 10 bosses who aren't going to take a break from the daily grind. Considering the stress and responsibility that comes with a leadership role, it's critical that all leaders schedule some downtime for themselves. It is easy to argue that you're too busy or play too vital of a role to take time off. But, the positive, longterm effects of a vacation far outweigh any short-term negatives. According to a U.S. News and World Report article, taking a vacation can reduce your risk of heart disease, increase your reaction time, lower stress, improve your outlook on life, and increase your productivity. Those are not only good benefits for you, but also your employees. After all, who doesn't want a stressfree, happier boss? With a little bit of forethought and by following a few guidelines, your time away from the office shouldn't cause any additional stress or headaches. Plan Ahead Unless your employees are very independent and accustomed to your absence, unexpectedly dropping a last minute vacation on them is probably not wise. Plan your time off and get it on the calendar and your workers' radars as far in advance as possible. This will allow time for you to effectively delegate tasks and for employees to become familiar with any new responsibilities before you take your much-needed break. Prepare for Your Return While it's easy to be JOIN THE NEW GENERATION OF GOOD LISTENERS focused on the vacation including emails and texts. itself, take a few minutes to If that's not realistic, lay out some ground think ahead to rules so those left your return. behind know Whether you what constitutes a plan to be gone valid reason to for a long weekcontact you. The program is designed so that anyone desiring to give a gift has the option of giving "Corning Cash" which can only be used to purchase goods and services at participating Chamber merchants. The Corning Rotary Club is planning to kick-off this program at the 2013 Corning Olive Festival by awarding "Corning Cash" as the prizes for the Olive Drop. At this time we are preparing the list of participating merchants and are asking all Chamber merchants interested in participating in the "Corning Cash" program to please contact the Chamber. Corning Cash will be an alternative to using U.S. currency. It will be available in three denominations, $20, $10, and $5 and each denomination will have the same face value as U.S. currency. Individuals wishing to give Corning Cash as a gift will be able to purchase the Corning Cash, at face value, from the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will complete the purchaser –"issued by" information and the purchaser will complete the "Recipient" information. The purchaser will be given a list of participating merchants, to be given to the recipient. Each bill is printed in duplicate and the Chamber will retain the duplicate copy for tracking purposes. Once the recipient has used the Corning Cash at a participating merchant's business, the merchant completes merchant information and redeems the Corning Cash at the Chamber of Commerce. Attached is a sample copy of a Corning Cash bill, showing the three lines that must be filled out. Again, any merchant interested in participating in the Corning Cash Program can do so by contacting the Chamber at info@corningcachamber.org or calling 824-5550.
