many hands, one heart 2 What's it Mean to Be an Alpha Delt? Coordinator; John Feltis '65, Howard Strickler '63, President. The tireless efforts of the Big Four and the support of the whole Board is a further example of unrelenting commitment to our fraternity—the lifetime commitment. BUILT TO LAST COMMITTEE Next is the Built to Last Committee. This was the brainchild of Brad Furber '86. The purpose of this effort morphed from a naming-rights focus into a broader fundraising effort, largely to finance purchases of furniture and other items to augment the Many Hands, One Heart capital campaign. Brad expanded connections to alumni involvement throughout the 1980s and beyond. This effort raised over $1 million, fulfilling its objectives. Equally important was the involvement of Brad's Brother J.P. Furber '84, who owns an interior design company, gave the use of their Shopify website for the coordination on incoming donations, and the purchase of the Choose a Brick campaign, plus other donations. Additionally his tasteful selection of common area furniture, as well as items to go into the study rooms, is invaluable. RETURN TO THE TEMPLE J.P. then became instrumental in tallying the income from the April 30 Return to the Temple event and auction. Thanks, Brad and J.P., for your leadership, energy, and direction. The auction was led by Susanna Frame, reporter for King TV and mother of Brother Nick Swedin '23. The total raised was over $180,000. Two other alumni essential to the success of the Return to the Temple committee were Chairman Brent Schlosstein '85 and ever-exuberant Chris Clarke '89. Chris worked diligently to put together the final program for the event, which was a resounding success with over 260 attendees. Included in that program was Dave Crowe '89, a comedian who kept the room in laughter, and Mike Self '91, who delivered the message of "Lifetime Commitment" to the fraternity. Room in this article prevents listing of some 20-plus Brothers that helped communicate the event to alumni and parents and participated in BTL efforts. Special thanks to Brad, J.P., Tom Berquist '86, Kyle Leonard '15, and others who worked diligently to make all this happen. Again, the lifetime commitment is brought to light through the efforts of so many. Finally, over $5 million was donated by alumni to the overall campaign to rebuild and remodel the Chapter House. The rebuild is now coming to an end, but the vision is there for fostering the next 100 years of Alpha Delta Phi at Washington. (See the donor list of contributors in the following pages.) A donor wall is being designed for listing past, current, and future donors. Additionally, naming rights for rooms is a work in progress, with many selected and now being designed. The lifetime commitment to Alpha Delta Phi goes on, and we continue to communicate in meaningful ways so that all may see our fraternity as a strong and vital part of the University of Washington community. Always more to follow. We recount the construction start and the risks—known and unknown—that arose. We recognize that there was never a guarantee that rebuilding the ADPhi Chapter House would be successful. In fact, failure stalked the project at every turn. The project is only being completed because hundreds of Brothers contributed time, money, expertise, and unwavering commitment to get the job done. In the end, financial contributions from alumni exceeded Pennington & Company's (our funding consultant) expectations. We marvel at the fixation on design and construction by Tom Chiado '86, on finance by Mike Derr '84, and on operations by Jeff MacNichols '94. We recount how the entire Alumni Board upped their game at every turn to keep alumni and undergraduates informed and how ADPhi Historian Bob Gilbert '81 added countless, special, historic features throughout the house design and construction. We laugh at how John Feltis '65 recruited Brad Furber '86 for one task that grew into organizing the Built to Last committee, expanding alumni communications, staging events, and raising money for change orders and furnishings. Brad even recruited David Crowe '89 to headline the Reopening Celebration. We listed the six classes of undergraduates that contributed to the project. Some provided input to the architectural program. Others participated in design review and offering operational advice. The most poignant contribution came from the classes of '21 and '22. They lived in difficult conditions in a leased fraternity so future generations of men could enjoy the ADPhi house that most now call the "Temple." The Temple is beautiful. I think it is fitting to offer it as a place where Alumni and Actives can participate in our founder Samuel Eells', living vision of "developing the whole man: morally, socially and intellectually.
