I am sitting in the ADPhi library writing this article, and it feels familiar. Commotion of moving crews placing furniture throughout the house (as planned by J.P. Furber '84) and the "to do" list on my notepad cannot distract me from the comfortable, inviting feeling of the library. It feels like coming home. My mind drifts to recalling time spent with Brothers as we sort out life. My nostalgia is broken when Alumni President Howard Strickler '63, ADPhi Chef Jen Lewandowski, and ADPhi President Preston Ball '23 walk into the library. They want to talk—just talk. The ADPhi library is an energetic magnet pulling people into the space to talk. It is the best of times. Moving In, Moving Up Recognizing Sacrifices and Hard Work on Our Temple Journey A s we come to the completion of the construction of our new Chapter House, we are witnessing the fulfillment of a grand vision. This shows the commitment and devotion to what it means to be an Alpha Delt. This motivation has produced the preservation of the original building and completion of a new addition to meet the next 100 years of our Chapter. What makes this all possible are the friendships and associations that are brought together in lifetime commitments. Thus, the tone to fulfill our vision with the Many Hands, One Heart capital campaign that raised over $5 million to make it all possible. The following are reflections and a list demonstrating what it means to be an Alpha Delt at Washington. THE ACTIVE CHAPTER We begin with the contributions of the undergraduates. In the beginning came early brainstorming on what they wanted the results of the project to be, followed by their willingness to persevere. The Chapter moved to the leased and empty Delta Upsilon facility, which avoided a temporary shutdown of the Chapter. This leased facility came with significant issues of ongoing maintenance and repair, poor internet service, and bleak original architecture. Additionally, Brothers dealt with the isolation and angst created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Frustrations built as final construction deadlines were not met, resulting from a nearly nine-month area wide concrete strike, supply chain issues, and a city that enforces building codes with bureaucratic diligence; however, the actives persevered through these challenges and frustrations. They did not give up, even with some unable to live in the new Temple due to graduation. The willingness to make this commitment is a major example of what it means to be an Alpha Delt. Thanks to you all and Xaipe to active Chapter Brothers for remaining committed. THE "BIG FOUR" Next comes the commitment of the Alumni Board. The Board is an example of Brotherhood coming together to carry out the vision. We drew upon the specific professional experience and expertise of our members. Foremost are the "Big Four" Board members. Without them, this project could never have been built. • Jeff MacNichols '94, our secretary, is an attorney who negotiated and enforced the lease with the DU landlord. • Tom Chiado '86 is the lead construction manager of the project. He brought extensive experience in building major projects and compliance with building codes, plus managing the construction budget. Tom contributed endless hours of in-kind contributions to this project. He was in constant contact with our general contractor, AGC, which is owned by Chad Quilici '95, another Brother! • Steve Loyd '69 is the building committee chairman. He was vital in seeing that our financing objectives remained current and that design concepts were communicated with the architects. Steve, who is a businessman of consummate integrity and a masterful problem solver, made sure all was progressing according to plan. • Michael Derr '84 did all the negotiations with the banks, ultimately obtaining the construction loan and the mortgage from Coastal Community Bank. Keith Dingfield '84, our banker, is a classmate of Michael's. THE ALUMNI BOARD Beyond the Big Four is the full supporting cast of the Alumni Board, comprised of Treasurer; Nate Sewell '15 (no small task), Vice President; Bob Gilbert '81 (extraordinaire designer of the Chapter Room) and Historian; Kyle Leonard '15, Communications and Chapter Liaison; Grant Osberg '81, Chapter Finance What's it Mean to Be an Alpha Delt?
