L ike many young graduates, Nick Birch '14 knows that maintaining a personal budget after college can be tough. "I spent my first few years working on a couple of startups; needless to say, I was not helping maintain the impressively high post-Rose income numbers," he recalls. Today, Nick is in a better position to contribute; he also gifts his time as a member of the Gamma Gamma Board of Trustees! When the chapter initiated the Building on Ron Reeves' Legacy Campaign, Nick was happy to help at his own pace by making a five-year pledge. "Now that I'm in a better spot, it was a no-brainer to donate—but I'm still most comfortable making that happen over time." Nick learned about his Gamma Gamma brothers during his recruitment and was also impressed by the chapter's history and the accomplishments of its alumni. He joined along with nearly a third of his dorm floormates, and together, they made many happy memories—from celebrations and spring break trips to random nights staying up and talking. There were also sad times, including the tragic passing of an active brother at Indiana State University. Nick remembers how the members of both chapters came together and supported one another in that tragedy. "Many of those brothers are still the guys I hang out with on the weekends—and are my closest friends." "Being an ATΩ taught me how to balance working hard, having fun, inspiring others, and understanding myself," Nick said. He served as house manager followed by chapter president, both of which taught him how to be a leader. Now, as a younger member of the Board of Trustees, he works closely with the active chapter to impart some of those same lessons and support of the fraternity that did so much for him. As the campaign continues, Nick encourages fellow alumni—of every age—to consider the formative moments in their personal and professional development. "ATΩ probably played a big part of that because of the supportive environment it enables. We can have an outstanding yet affordable fraternity on campus if we, the alumni, can help keep the operational costs of the chapter house to a minimum. This campaign along with the associated capital endowment will do that." Nick lives in Indianapolis, where he is in his sixth year coaching baseball at North Central High School. He also enjoys all things outdoors, such as running and biking. To connect with Nick or ask him more about the campaign, email him at nick@birchstartups.com.
