He then had a 40-year career in his family business of manufacturing ice for the Chicago metro area. During that time, Hank served a chairman of the board of the International Packaged Ice Association at age 37, received the industry's highest award, and co-founded the industry's research foundation. "I have always felt that my education from the business school at Illinois has served me well," he said. A Lifelong Commitment In 1988, Hank and Seely Johnston 1924 spearheaded The DU Challenge capital campaign as co-chairmen. The successful campaign for a major house renovation had an average contribution of $300 per donor; a plaque commemorating those donors hangs on the front wall in the Chapter House to this day. Hank gained an even deeper appreciation for the fraternity as he got to know the many campaign participants, from alumni board members and era leaders to general donors. Hank also served on the board of the U of I Alumni Association and as chairman of the Illinois Chapter Alumni Board—the latter being three times over three separate decades. In his third stint on the board, they established the Chapter's educational fund, IL-DUEF. At the Chapter's 100th anniversary celebration, the national fraternity surprised Hank by awarding him the Founders Medal, which recognizes alumni and volunteers "for their support of the fraternity above and beyond the bonds of brotherhood." "I'm grateful to the board for acknowledging our Chapter's progress and for their way of saying that they think I did my best to serve my Chapter—not just as a student, but for keeps." A Rare Commodity Hank and Judy, his wife of nearly 62 years, live in Palos Heights, Illinois. They have three grown children and nine grandchildren. Hank believes in working hard and playing hard, and in his spare time, he has enjoyed outdoor activities such as long-distance running, skiing, golfing, and fishing. For 20 years after retiring, he volunteered with a charity on the southeast side of Chicago, which provided hot meals, clothing, and services to low-income families, homeless people, and felons recently released from prison. To this day, Hank remains in touch with many Delta Upsilon brothers from his college days, continuing their active relationship that began decades ago. Page 2 THE DULINE A lthough we were hit hard by COVID last year, we have bounced back and are doing better than ever. We had a healthy class of 25 new '25s this past fall, thanks to our awesome recruitment chairmen, Corey Wong '23, Alex Predescu '24.5, and Garrett Peterson '24. To make things even better, this spring we have 12 new '25.5s, with our recruitment chairmen being Alex Predescu, Dylan Prete '25, and Philip Mackey '25. Their hard work paid off, and they helped secure the future of the DU Illinois Chapter, with many of these new members planning on living in the house. After a brief hiatus due to COVID, intramurals are back. We had DUs participate in sports such as soccer, bowling, basketball, and dodgeball. On top of this, our very own DU bowling team took home the intramural bowling title! Congratulations to Will Charlton '25, Sean Yesko '25, Alex Dahl '24, Mark Bostrom '25, and Nolan Peacock '24 for winning the bowling league! On the philanthropy side of things, our very own Ronak Parmar '23 organized a fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association. He put together an Alzheimer's fair that included events such as a DUnk tank, pieing a DU in the face, water balloon fights, a bounce house obstacle course, and more. Everyone had a blast, and after many water balloons and pies to the face, we raised $600 for the Alzheimer's Association. Outside of our own philanthropy, we also had DUs participating in many events for other Greek life organizations such as Mac N' Phis, KD Dodgeball, and Pie a Phi, to name a few. Academically speaking, we had a very successful year. All of our members had a term GPA over 2.5, and we enjoyed a Chapter GPA of 3.6. This placed us in eighth among all fraternities on campus. I hope that this newsletter finds everyone doing well. We at the Illinois Chapter look forward to seeing you all soon. Hopefully, we see many friendly faces at Homecoming!
