Someone has said, "Volunteers decide to tackle society's greatest challenges, to build stronger communities and to be a force that transforms the world," and how true it is. Usually in the Spring in Rutherford County there is an "Operation In As Much" event when volunteers go out into the community to volunteer. Hopefully we'll have the emphasis day again this year as it gives people an opportunity to volunteer in larger groups. This is a day often hosted by churches or civic organizations. Many will also participate in Make a Difference Day sponsored by United Way. During these special emphasis days people will come out to rake leaves, trim shrubbery, mow grass, cook casseroles, mop fl oors, roof homes and build handicapped ramps with organizations such as Rutherford Housing Partnership and Women Roofers. Volunteers help to run errands for senior citizens or the disabled; they paint houses, plant gardens, wash windows or cars and repair rotted fl oors. Often when walking into an unfamiliar place, the fi rst face we see is that of a volunteer, someone who works tirelessly every day on a job without pay to make your day better. Every organization, institution, library, school, church, civic groups, children's and youth groups and senior citizen organizations function today because of volunteers. People volunteer hours with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H Clubs, PTOs at schools, rest homes residents, on the athletic fi elds and in the gymnasiums. What if we didn't have volunteers? When I was in grammar school, the volunteers who came into our class for holiday parties were Grade Mothers. I remember wishing my mama could be a Grade Mother but she worked a full-time job. I still remember the names of those Grade Mothers who helped with parties and drove us on fi eld trips — among my fi rst heroes. In every area of life volunteers are there. Museums, educational foundations, and libraries function because of libraries. What about festivals of all types, town music nights and movie nights? They happen because people are willing to volunteer. What about Sunday School teachers at church, mission group leaders and nursery volunteers. Those programs wouldn't be without those who are willing to give of their time. In March 2020 when Covid-19 hit, I knew for sure I could not stay at home. I was not created to stay at home. Oh, I believed Covid was real, and still do, but I needed something I could do outside that was safe. I was led to the Washburn Community Outreach Center where I am still volunteering two years later. Why? Volunteering made me feel better during a time of so much sadness. At least I could help pack food boxes for those who needed them and couldn't get to a grocery store. We practiced all the safety suggestions - masks, hand sanitizer and keeping our distances. Residents of nursing homes and rest homes are desperate for a visit. For a few years — without telling her family — my mama went to a neighborhood rest home every Tuesday and visited those who had no family, no visitors at all. At Christmas she threw a party for them and with the help of her Sunday school class everyone received a Christmas gift. My mama was a busy person. She never stopped working outside, in the garden or house — except on Tuesday afternoons which were carved out for rest home visits. Volunteering kept her going. Want to make a difference? Find a place to help and if you can't, send me an email. I can help you fi nd your fi t. The opportunities to volunteer are endless and rewards are life changing. Help a child, young person, senior citizen, an incarcerated man or woman; help an animal in need of companionship. What's your favorite cause? I am sure there is a volunteer job waiting for you.
