8 – 2022 Westside Community Guide ■ Explore a Westside "treasure" By Brittany Smith e Old Spanish Treasure Cave is situated just north of Gravette, in an area known as Treasure Hollow and is one of the Ozark's biggest and most fascinating mysteries. You can take a guided tour through the cavern and learn all about the Spanish Conquistadors and their hidden treasure. It is even believed that some of the treasure is still in the cave, just waiting to be discovered. e legend of e Old Spanish Treasure Cave says that Spanish soldiers raided an Indian camp and stole their fortune in gold and then hid the gold in one of the cave's passageways. e Indians were seeking revenge and found the Spaniards in the cave and killed them but were never able to recover the gold. Treasure hunters searched for years for the missing gold, but it was never found. e cave was rediscovered in 1885 and was opened to the public in the late 1930s as a tourist attraction. ere are ongoing expeditions throughout the caves that have brought discoveries of hidden rail tracks, symbols carved into the walls, and there are numerous hidden rooms and tunnels still waiting to be explored. e Treasure Cave is an adventure for every member of the family to enjoy beginning with the guided cave tours.
