"Summer is not summer without Prairie Grove Aquatic Park (PGAP)," says Larry Oelrich, the city's administrative coordinator. "It's a great place to just hang with your kids on a hot summer day." Larry is excited to share with the public some of the park's new and upcoming features coming as part of a major rehab project and including a new splash pad facility and several more shade structures. "We expect the park to open on May 27 through August 14," he said. e aquatic park, located 12 miles west of Fayetteville, is a favorite family playground for locals as well as folks from neighboring communities like Fayetteville, Farmington, West Fork, Lincoln, Westville, and Greenland. "Typical attendance at PGAP is between 18,000-22,000 people each year," Larry said. Besides swooshing down any of several fun water slides, you can swim in the large pools or just chill in shallow waters. ere's a kiddie pool too. Swimming lessons are available for children, as well as lap swimming and water aerobics for ages 13 and up. Kids can also join the city's locally sponsored competitive swim team, the Prairie Grove Piranhas. If you're looking for a perfect party place, you can schedule a private party at night. One special event is the annual Soggy Doggy Pool Party sponsored by the Friends of Prairie Grove Pound. It features concessions, local vendors, and a raffle to raise funds for the nonprofit with its mission of helping homeless animals in the community. Another event that's been held at the park is the annual Celebrate Prairie Grove, offering free swimming, concessions, bouncy houses and a fireworks display. PGAP first opened on July 4, 2001. It employs up to 40 seasonal workers. "ese are mostly high school and college-aged employees, making us the largest employer locally of teens," Larry noted.
