And thanks to current owners, Timothy and Deanna O'Brien, it has been restored to its original charm and is a "must see" if you are traveling to Lincoln. "We bought Appletown Store for two main reasons," Deanna began. "e first was the warehouse buildings that we restored and made rentable structures. e second reason was to save the Appletown building that is a huge part of Lincoln history. e idea for the store itself came from the fact that Lincoln needed a place to shop and we wanted to see the Appletown Store alive again." e history that Deanna is talking about goes back to when the store originally opened in 1949. "I would like everyone to remember that Lincoln was founded on apples," Deanna noted. "And Appletown was the largest apple orchard in northwest Arkansas. It was an icon. And an important part of the history of Arkansas. Apples brought the train to town and provided up to 150 jobs in the peak operation months of summer. e Appletown Store was a restaurant plus a produce and fruit stand. ousands of travelers stopped off in Appletown for the apples and other products." When you step inside Appletown Store, you will see that history on display everywhere. "I think the best thing about running Appletown is the memories we conjure up in everyone who walks in," Deanna said. "e store looks very similar to the way it always did. We have lots of memorabilia hanging on the walls donated by the Watsons, who were the second owners, and the Rogers, who were the founders and longtime owners. We feel like we are keeping the Appletown and its founders memories alive and that feels really good to Tim and myself." e O'Briens run the store, assisted by one full time employee, Allena, and two part-time Saturday helpers they use when they get busy. Since Tim and Deanna both have full time jobs, they let Allena run the store during the week. "We feel very vested in Lincoln and want to help to work to make it grow and thrive," Deanna said. "I am currently on the Planning Commission and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Tim and I both work for Lincoln Area Realty here in town." e store currently has 56 vendors who offer a huge assortment of items both new Bringing Lincoln history back to life Appletown Store and Farmers Market By Randy Rice continued on page 20 18 | 2022 West Washington County Directory
