J essica Lebel '11 always knew she would become a meteorologist, but she did not expect the people in her life to be such a supporting party to her career. "My sorority sisters were always so supportive of my career choice," Jessica shared. "My senior year at KU, I worked weekends doing weather at 6 News in Lawrence. My first night on live TV, a group of Sigma Kappas got together to watch me. It meant so much to have their support and encouragement." Covering big weather events is the highlight of Jessica's career. From tornados to hailstorms to multiday blizzards and even devastating wildfires, it is an honor to provide lifesaving weather information to the public. "I have been able to teach weather safety to thousands of kids across Colorado and have partnered with several charity organizations to emcee their fundraising events," Jessica said. "Being able to give back to the community is one of my favorite parts of the job." Jessica knew going through recruitment her freshman year that she had found her sisters in Sigma Kappa. She felt an instant connection and loved that the chapter was a diverse group of women from all over the country. "I am from Colorado and didn't know anyone when I started freshman year at KU," Jessica said. "It was a relief to find a sorority full of girls like me who were from all over and wanted to build lifelong friendships." Jessica looks back on her college years at KU fondly because of Sigma Kappa. She loved being surrounded by friends all the time and always having events to attend. "Being a member of Xi Chapter allowed me to meet so many incredible people," Jessica said. "It also helped me practice leadership skills and learn to work with a variety of personalities." Jessica remains in contact with many of her sisters today, who are some of her closest friends in life. They have big group texts and FaceTime one another to share life updates. "I have a few sisters that were bridesmaids in my wedding," Jessica shared. "I am so thankful for those friendships." Jessica and her fiancé married on March 26, 2022, and have a 1-year-old English pointer/poodle mix who was the ring bearer at their wedding. As a meteorologist, Jessica loves the outdoors, and this is evident in her hobbies. "I love camping, hiking, or skiing," Jessica said. "I always enjoy being in nature. I also love to watch KU basketball games, kick the soccer ball around, online shop, and watch The Bachelor." You can connect with Jessica at jlebel1810@gmail.com. Our newly elected executive board.
