2 I n the spring of 1884, six KU undergraduate students organized themselves as a "secret anti-secret" group to undermine the unwarranted influence that two fraternities had over student elections. On June 21, 1884, the same six men received the initial charter for Nu Chapter of Sigma Nu, the fraternity's tenth chapter and the first located west of the Mississippi River. In the 138 years that have passed since Joel Howard became Nu 1, Nu Chapter has enhanced the lives of more than 2,500 (and counting) members. While KU educates the brain, Nu Chapter teaches values, (Love, Honor, Truth), life skills (leadership, organization, teamwork), and brotherhood. For many, these traits became integral to our personal and career success and helped make us the men we are today. 138 Years of Leadership W e are in the unique position as alumni brothers to shape the future of Nu Chapter and its greatest asset: Stubbs Mansion. If we wish for Sigma Nu to maintain its top-tier status on campus and in recruiting, we must provide a safe, comfortable, and modern facility where our members can live and thrive. As other KU fraternities and the KU dorm system upgrade their residential offerings, our beloved collegiate home is no longer the golden gem it once was. We can choose to re-establish the Governor's Mansion as the premier Greek property, "the (Black and) Gold Standard" among all KU fraternity houses.
