New coach — check. New players — check. New league — check. While the name Schwabauer has been as closely tied to the Red Bluff program in recent years as green helmets, it won’t be this year. John Miller replaced John Schwabauer as head football coach during the offseason. Zack Schwabauer, the team’s leading rusher the past three seasons graduat- ed, as did Scott Avery, Tay- lor Hickson, Derek Jones and Greg Dohmen. Statistically not much returns from last season on offense other than quarter- back Cory Lyon, who threw for 696 yards and eight touchdowns. Lyon came into last sea- son as a backup and was inserted mid-game against Anderson. He rallied the Spartans for three touch- downs in the final eight min- utes of the game for a thrilling 21-17 Spartans vic- tory. It was one of only three wins in 2009 as the Spartans limped to a 3-7 record and missed the playoffs for the fifth straight year. To turn that situation around, Miller has previous- ly stated he would bring in a ball-swarming defensive Daily News photos by Rich Greene (Top) John Miller addresses the team during his first practice as Red Bluff Spartans football coach. (Bottom) The Spartans jog around the field in the first of many conditioning drills to come during the month ahead. strategy. But once again, Miller will have to do it with a whole new cast of characters as the top five tacklers from 2009 are gone. Defensive back Ian Hill is the leading returner, with 25 tackles and one intercep- tion. However, even Hill and Lyon won’t be handed start- ing jobs this season. Miller addressed the team Monday, by reiterating a comment he has previous- ly made — every job is up for grabs on this team. The Spartans surely won’t have any of the top returning names in the Northern Section, but they do hope to be one of the bet- ter conditioned teams. Their offseason workout program was conducted by Tehama Family Fitness Center general manager Troy Lalaguna, who was also at Monday’s afternoon practice. Among the coaching help Miller has brought in this year, includes Spartans varsity wrestling coach Dave Rottenberg. Miller previously served as one of Rottenberg’s assis- tant wrestling coaches. The Spartans also find themselves in a new league this season as the Eastern Athletic League has added two schools and split in two. Red Bluff will compete in the EAL South along with Oroville and Las Plumas and perennial foot- ball powerhouses Lassen and Paradise. This year’s schedule starts with a pair of road games, beginning at Pleas- ant Valley on Sept. 3 to open the season and then at Shas- ta on Sept. 10. The Spartans open up their home slate with the Tehama County Shootout against Corning on Sept. 17. After a road trip to Chico the following week the Spartans play their remain- ing four home games of the season against West Valley, Lassen, Paradise and Foothill. The Spartans close the schedule with two road trips to Harrison Stadium to play Oroville and Las Plumas. The Spartans first com- petition will come at a scrimmage at Sutter on Aug. 21. The San Francisco 49ers coach said the two rookies have won starting jobs along the team’s offensive line just nine days into training camp. The 49ers also will have a new starter at center after Eric Heitmann broke his left leg during practice Mon- day morning. Heitmann is expected to miss up to two months. Davis, the No. 11 overall pick in the draft, will now work exclusively with the first-team offense at right tackle. Iupati, drafted six picks after Davis, has moved to first on the depth chart at left guard. ‘‘Those guys showed us that they have the ability to step in and be able to do it,’’ Singletary said. ‘‘If that’s the case, we have to give them all the reps that we can possibly give them in order to do the job and be ready.’’ The 49ers this year became the third team in NFL history to draft two offen- sive linemen in the first round, and both will make their debuts in Sunday’s pre- season opener at Indianapolis. Davis, who doesn’t turn 21 until October, would become one of the youngest 49ers ever to start a regular- season opener if he remains in the line- up for San Francisco’s Sept. 12 game at Seattle. While Iupati has been running pri- marily with the first team since the first day of padded practices, Davis didn’t move ahead of incumbent Adam Sny- der until taking all the first-team reps Saturday. ‘‘This is a confidence booster, but you’ve got to put everything into per- spective,’’ Davis said. ‘‘That’s just the first step. That’s not my main goal. I want to be the best player I can possi- bly be.’’ The 49ers experienced even more shuffling along the offensive line after David Baas moved to center in place of Heitmann, San Francisco’s most effec- tive and consistent offensive lineman in recent seasons. Heitmann fractured his left fibula while pulling out on a running play. Heitmann has started every game at center the past three seasons. He start- ed the first 14 games of 2006 before breaking his left tibia. Baas, who started all 16 games last season at left guard, suffered a concus- sion on Aug. 2 and missed several days of practice. Iupati took his place and hasn’t budged since. Singletary said Baas will now be the top backup to Iupati and challenge vet- eran Tony Wragge for starting center duties. Wragge started two games at center for the 49ers after Heitmann was injured in 2006. Baas played center as a senior at Michigan in 2004, when he was named Big Ten offensive lineman of the year. ‘‘We just have to give Baas a chance to really see what he can do at the posi- tion,’’ Singletary said. Baas, who has 38 career starts at both guard positions, said he is focused on his new opportunity at center. ‘‘I want to win just like everybody else,’’ Baas said. ‘‘So I’m coming out here and competing, and if they want me to compete at center, that’s what I’m gonna do. I can’t sit here and com- plain about it. You have to move on, you have to be the best football player at whatever position you can, so that’s what I’m doing. I just want to play.’’
