Tuesday, August 10, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Discovery Center summer camps conclude The Sacramento River Discovery Center con- cluded a very successful Summer Day camps pro- gram with the campers and families learning about the native Ameri- cans that would camp in the area of the Mendoci- no National Forest’s Red Bluff Recreation Area near the Sacramento River during the hot summer months. Mem- bers of the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki taught campers about Indian Fry Bread and helped them learn about the his- tory of the Nomlaki. The Paskenta Band of Nom- laki are the providers of funding that make the Summer camps possible for local youth through a generous grant that funds the camp’s director’s position. The community sup- ported the programs by the donations of funds to provide financial aid to campers through camperships. Kiwanis of Red Bluff, Soroptimist International of Red Bluff and Wells Fargo provided some of that financial assistance. The summer camps program makes use of many of the Mendocino National Forest‚s 488 acre Red Bluff Recreation Area. This unique classroom provides youth with an opportunity to learn about many different habitats that are part of the northern Sacramento River valley and pro- vides an opportunity to learn how to protect, pre- serve and restore it so it will be there will safe drinking water and wildlife habitat for future generations.
