It is a response of someone whose whole world has fallen apart and is feeling abandoned by God. Why did it have to be my spouse, my parent, my child or my loved one? Where was God? Why did God allow this to happen? Am I ever going get through this? These are just a few of the questions that plague us when death comes into our life. It is only human to ask questions when we lose someone who has been the object of our love. Unanswered questions are a reminder that our understanding of life and death is limited at best. In order to bring some meaning to our loss we must turn to the Word of God. There is a passage of scripture which will allow us to see the heart of God and hopefully bring us the comfort we so desperately need. The narrative is found in the Gospel of John chapter eleven. Lazarus, a beloved friend of Jesus, had died. As Jesus approached the burial tomb and the grieving family, he was moved with intense sorrow. It was there where we read, "Jesus wept." Even though he did not answer their doubts, he did show his compassion through his words and actions. When tragedy strikes our life, we can take comfort that God is moved with our sorrow. His heart is touched with our sadness, and he alone has the power to heal the brokenhearted. He has conquered death and the grave and promises eternal life which transcends our earthly sorrow. If we and our loved ones have trusted Jesus as our Savior, he assures us of a glad reunion. His answer to the tragedy of death is resurrection. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."
