I'm thankful for the faithfulness of friends. Although I know a lot of people from Michigan and have been friends with them for decades, traveling there by car with two friends to visit two mutual friends in Hudson was certainly a trip to remember. The car ride to Michigan on Wednesday was divided into an afternoon and the morning. The car ride home— probably 11 hours — was on Sunday. When we passed an exit sign to Rockport in West Virginia on Friday evening, warm memories overcame me of a mission trip there many years ago to help a small church with construction and Vacation Bible School. I also had an opportunity to travel through Ohio, another state I had not visited. We had a tasty country Sunday breakfast at LuLu's which was awesome. Traveling through Ohio I saw exits to cities where several other friends in Rutherford County call home - Youngstown, Cleveland and Columbus. There was a time a long time ago when Daddy would drive a fi sh truck to Ohio to get a load of fi sh for Toms Lake to earn extra money for our family. I discovered it was a long ride to haul fi sh to Danieltown. Hudson is a town with less than 3,000 people, a small downtown area that included a walking trail we also visited. The trail is four miles long and I didn't do the entire trail on the freezing cold afternoon but I am proud to say I walked half of it followed by small jaunts while waiting on the three other walkers to fi nish. The trail reminded me of the Thermal Belt Rail Trail because it was asphalt, clean, wide for cyclists, walkers, runners, pets and baby carriages with small ponds scattered along parts of the trail. They were frozen over. It was cold in Michigan. We spent a lot of time in the car once we got to Michigan to visit the childhood homes of my friends, their schools and churches in Adrian and Hudson. Dinner on Friday evening was at a small restaurant in Hudson that reminded me of a small fi sh camp here in Rutherford County. But they are not called fi sh camps - but on Friday nights the restaurant menu specializes in fried- fi sh. Complete with a choice of potato and salad the supper was a winner on a cold Friday evening. Ice fi shing caught my eye as we rode-around most of Saturday. Brave fi shermen dressed in bright colors of clothing were easier spotted out in the lake. I had never seen real life ice fi shing. Riding around in the car reminded me of Sunday afternoons as a child - riding around with family. The state has the second-most water of any state, second only to Alaska. Everywhere it seemed, there was a lake — small ones and very large ones with homes along the shorelines. I am not sure what I expected to see as we traveled to Michigan, but I was pleasantly surprised by the thousands and thousands of acres of fl at farmland throughout the state. The land featured small farm homes in the middle of the land that was accented by huge barns and numerous tall silos. We didn't see mountains until we got back Sunday into the hills of Tennessee and North Carolina. The drive there and back were on different stretches of interstate and small country roads which made the trip even more enjoyable. Sunday morning as we drove from Hudson we must have traveled on 15 different country roads. I will be forever grateful to friends who invited me to join them on the Michigan trip to visit mutual friends. A lifetime of memories were created in a place I'd never been, traveling hundreds of miles of roadway with friends for life. It was good to get back on the road again. My bags are packed. I'm ready to go. Thanks, again for the memories. Contact Jean at: gordonjean211@ gmail.com A ROAD TRIP TO MICHIGAN WITH FRIENDS COULDN'T HAVE BEEN BETTER By: Jean Gordon NO MORE ROBERT H.
