F CUS On Boards and Commissions Needing Applicants Parking Deck Wins Award for Architectural Achievement The City of Fayetteville is looking to its citizens to help fill vacancies for the following boards and commissions: The parking deck opened last year and is attached to the Robert C. Williams Business Center. Designed with the public's safety in mind, the parking deck is equipped with many safety features, including lighting that is 2.5 times brighter than state standards; the first floor of the deck, in fact, has 19-foot ceilings that allow for a more open and even distribution of lighting. There are security cameras inside and outside of the facility, a glass elevator and stairwell and emergency call boxes on each level that are directly linked to 911 police dispatchers. All of the special safety considerations were included in the design, specifically toward creating a user-friendly, highly visible facility. It was built with a 75-year service life, using poured-in-place construction (versus pre-cast), minimizing annual maintenance costs. • • • • • • • • • • • • The Franklin Street Parking Deck has been recognized by the International Parking Institute (IPI) with the Award for Architectural Achievement, which is IPI's highest award of excellence. The structure includes several other purposeful and thoughtful aesthetic features, such as a brick façade that is similar to other downtown buildings. The parking deck has nearly 300 spaces and is within walking distance from numerous downtown restaurants and shops; it has been a welcome addition during the Dogwood Festival in April and the International Folk Festival in September, both of which are Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 events. Rain Barrels at Mazarick Park: Helping Stormwater Quality and Quantity The City of Fayetteville Stormwater Division has teamed up with Mazarick Park to promote rain harvesting and rain barrel use. Last summer, Mazarick Park, which is operated by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation, and the Stormwater Division worked together to install a rain barrel to demonstrate to homeowners how to properly set up a rain barrel, as well as to post an educational sign that describes the benefits and uses of harvested rain water. Mazarick Park uses the water from the rain barrel to water nearby landscape plants and flowers. Cumberland County Soil and Water District donated the rain barrel that is now being used. Rain water harvesting has become very popular in the past few years, due to prolonged drought conditions and rising utility bills. Rain barrels are above-ground water storage tanks that capture stormwater runoff from rooftops using the gutter system to route the water into the barrel. When rain water is captured using a rain barrel, it reduces the amount of stormwater runoff generated by a rain event. This reduces the burden on the drainage system. It also lowers the potential for pollutants to enter the drainage system, which protects water quality. The rain water that is harvested is then used to water nearby gardens. If you are interested in learning more about rain barrels, and to see a rain barrel in use, head on over to Mazarick Park and check it out. If you have questions about the City's Stormwater program, please call the Stormwater Hotline at (910) 433-1613 or check us out on the web at www.cityoffayetteville.org/stormwater.
