RETAILOBSERVER.COM MARCH 2022 36 FIRST PLACE / SMALL CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN (under 250 sq. ft.) Shai Arviv, CEO and Chief Designer Decori Kitchens Photo: Nicole Larson Prospect Heights Kitchen — The objective of this project was to create a modern kitchen to look like a furniture unit, due to its designated location at the center of the apartment, and yet have maximized ergonomics, to attract luxury buyers and to provide ample interior storage and functionality solutions. To add dimension and uniqueness, I framed the cooktop and the sink area with a walnut wood veneer panel, creating a nook-like effect and also used walnut for the finger-grip backer for a complete wrap-around contrasting illusion. The result added organic warmth to the white lacquered cabinetry. Built-in appliances with custom color matching panels were used on applicable units. The surrounding walnut panel received overhead low- profile lights routed to a designated outlet, concealed inside the integrated hood's zone, acting as accent lighting and adding illumination to the workspace. A finger-grip handle-less system eliminated the need for hardware on the base units, and touch-latch was used elsewhere. Ample drawers were provided, made of stainless steel to maintain the modern aesthetics on the interior as well. A four-bin recycling center was used. For added storage, the nook-like design allowed for a two-tier upper wall cabinetry configuration whereby the top tier allows for long-term storage with full depth capacity, while the lower tier is used for daily storage, a section that utilized a grab/ pull opening mechanism. Due to the low ceiling and fixed support frames in it, the exhaust duct for the integrated hood could not be embedded entirely in the celling, and had to project downwards by ~6". Some of the top-tier cabinets were pre-notched to accept the vent duct, which was completely concealed, even when the cabinet doors are open. The modern-type hardware was powder-coated and color-matched to blend in with lacquered white doors.
