The Connected Kitchen — This kitchen is all about connectivity — a state of being that has grown even more important since the onset of the pandemic. Never has creating connections to family, friends, and the flow of information been more critical to individual well-being. Working with a local builder who defined the new home's concept as Monticello in the 21st century, the kitchen design is timeless and enduring but still strikingly modern. Paying careful attention to balance and proportion against the home's soaring ceilings and abundant light, we furred out the walls to create niches for perimeter cabinetry. The dramatic backdrop of matte black cabinetry conceals appliances and pops against a white stone backsplash with striking black veins. The counters — in black stone with white veins — intensify the contrast, while large drawer bases maximize storage and accessibility. Designated work zones, double islands, wide aisles, and a gracious seating area make possible seamless interaction between residents and their guests. One island — conveniently located near a full-height integrated wine fridge — creates the opportunity for entertaining and socializing. The second island features the functional and stylish Galley Workstation. This innovative appliance includes culinary tools that facilitate seamless prep, cooking, and serving experiences. In front of a wide bay window, two cozy armchairs flank a sofa and continental height table, inviting guests to gather, relax and take in the view. A 75-inch LED panel functions as a big on-wall iPad. Here, residents can zoom in on family and friends, pull up their favorite Epicurious recipe, or watch a how-to video on sous vide — all from the prep island. No matter what the new normal looks like, the connected kitchen will no doubt serve homeowners well for years to come.
