RETAILOBSERVER.COM MARCH 2022 34 FIRST PLACE / LARGE TRADITIONAL KITCHEN (over 250 sq. ft.) continued from page 13 The Uncommon Kitchen — Pushing the boundaries of traditional design, this kitchen utilizes shapes, lines and color to define this space and draw the viewers eye around the room to the various details. Traditional materials such as wood cabinets, marble countertops and backsplash and brass fixtures are utilized in non- traditional ways to redefine the traditional kitchen. Custom cabinet doors with 3-dimensional details adorn the tower cabinets that flank the range wall. These same cabinets feature inset brass rivets and cut rock crystal knobs that repeat the pyramid effect of the 3-dimensional doors. The tower cabinet to the left of the range features interior roll-outs to house small appliances and dishes. An interior power strip which is turned off when the doors are closed via a jamb switch allows for the appliances to be used in place. The sister cabinet to the right of the range houses an interior chef's pantry complete with swing-out shelves for optimal storage. Deep drawers allow the homeowners to see the contents without crouching and stooping with a door base cabinet ensuring optimal efficiency. Drawers to the immediate left and right of the range feature a drawer within a drawer design for easy reach of cooking utensils and spices. The use of color and pattern in the marble backsplash tile commands the focus and is contrasted by the simplicity of the shapes of the custom brass vent hood and light sconces. A custom barn door repeats the backsplash shapes with inset brass detailing and was designed to close off the breakfast and family rooms. Bold black cone-shaped pendants were chosen for their simplicity of shape and to repeat the black used in the backsplash tile. The original kitchen was closed off from the sunken living room, but during construction the wall was removed and a glass panel designed to keep the spaces visually open while providing safety. A custom parson's table was designed to coordinate with the cabinetry and serves as a great place to watch the TV in the living room while grabbing a quick bite. While the elevated kitchen allowed for easy relocation of plumbing, the new location of the range hood meant coming up with creative solutions to vent the new hood out of the house with an existing second floor above the kitchen. Ultimately a path was created for a roof penetration to vent out. Shea Pumarejo, CMKBD, Owner and Principal Designer Younique Designs Photo: Jennifer Siu-Rivera
