2B Daily News – Tuesday, July 23, 2013 49ERS MLB Wright fails physical; trade voided Dodgers' Kemp out for 3 games SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Cornerback Eric Wright failed his physical with the San Francisco 49ers, nullifying a trade to bring him to Northern California from Tampa Bay. He was subsequently released by the Buccaneers. San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh declined to say specifically what portion of the physical Wright failed and made just a brief statement on the situation. ''We don't ever talk about that,'' Harbaugh said Monday. ''The information is he didn't pass his physical, he's not on the team.'' Thus ends a quirky four-day stretch that began after the 49ers appeared to have acquired the former second-round draft pick from Tampa Bay on Friday in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2014. Shortly thereafter, reports surfaced that Wright had been arrested a week earlier in Los Angeles on an unspecified misdemeanor charge. It's unclear if the 49ers were aware of Wright's situation when they made the trade. Wright was arrested in 2012 on felony DUI charges and was suspended for four games last season by the NFL for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy in his first season with the Bucs. Wright signed a A'S (Continued from page 1B) from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his second major league start against Jarrod Parker (6-6). The 23year-old Cosart took a nohitter into the seventh inning and got the win in his debut against Tampa Bay just before the break, allowing two hits and no runs in eight-plus innings. ... Home Run Derby winner Yoenis Cespedes was out for the fourth straight game because of a sore left wrist but is feeling better. Oakland manager five-year, $35.3 million contract with the Bucs prior to the 2012 season. The move to trade for Wright immediately raised eyebrows after Harbaugh's comments during the team's June minicamp when he made it clear he wouldn't accept players breaking the NFL's policy on performanceenhancing drugs for a perceived edge. Even though Wright was never officially on the 49ers roster, Harbaugh emphasized his message is still the same. ''That hasn't changed,'' he said. ''I think our guys do a good job of playing within the rules.'' Harbaugh avoided questions about 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks' legal issues. Brooks allegedly hit teammate Lamar Divens in the head with a bottle multiple times during an altercation on June 8 but avoided prosecution when the Santa Clara district attorney's office declined to file charges because of insufficient evidence. Brooks has met with team officials regarding the incident but Harbaugh declined to say what, if any, discipline the veteran linebacker will face. ''Had conversations (with him) but not that we're going to talk about out here,'' Har- baugh said. ''I'm not publicly discussing what our conversations have been with Ahmad or any of our players.'' The 49ers held the third day of training camp practice for rookies only. Veterans report on Wednesday, one day before the first full team workout. Michael Crabtree, San Francisco's leading receiver in 2012, won't be among them — at least not on the field. Crabtree underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon after tearing it during a practice May 21 and is still in the early stages of rehabilitation. The 49ers aren't ruling out Crabtree returning at some point during the season. ''I wouldn't categorize it as ahead of schedule because he is just starting to move on it,'' Harbaugh said. ''It's just been healing but it looks great. That's from the words of the doctor.'' The news on Kyle Williams is more encouraging. Harbaugh said he is very optimistic Williams will be able to practice when the veterans check in. Williams is coming back from a knee injury suffered late last season. Bob Melvin said Cespedes did a lot of work in the cage and will take batting practice Tuesday if he doesn't feel any soreness. Melvin isn't sure if Cespedes could play Tuesday. ... A's LHP Brett Anderson, who has been on the disabled list since May 1 with a stress fracture in his right foot, threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session. ''He threw the ball really well,'' Melvin said. ''You could tell he was excited to be out there and he didn't have any issues with his foot.'' Melvin said Anderson will throw another bullpen session Wednesday. TORONTO (AP) — Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp is expected to miss the three-game series against the Blue Jays after spraining his left ankle. Out of the lineup for 11 games with a sore left shoulder, Kemp came off the 15day disabled list before Sunday's 9-2 win over the Washington Nationals. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, but limped off the field after sliding into home plate on a force play in the ninth inning. Kemp is expected to have X-rays on Monday night, but the team believes he does not have either a fracture or ligament damage. Manager Don Mattingly said Monday he was less optimistic that Kemp would avoid a return to the DL. He said the team hoped to have a clearer picture of Kemp's status Tuesday. ''I'm probably not feeling as good about it as I did yesterday,'' Mattingly said. ''It could go the wrong direction. Either this thing's going to get (better) and we'll know pretty quickly or it's going to be a little more severe.'' Mattingly said Kemp came to the stadium at noon Monday and spent the afternoon undergoing treatment. He was expected to do the same Tuesday. Kemp missed 24 games in May and June with a sore right hamstring. A two-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner and two-time Silver Slugger, he's batting .263 with five homers and 27 RBIs in 62 games this season. Kemp walked in the ninth Sunday and was on third with two outs when Carl Crawford hit a slow roller toward first. It would have been an infield hit had Kemp hustled home. Instead, he jogged and allowed the Nationals to make a play at the plate. He was hurt sliding into the catcher. Mattingly said he saw no need to speak to Kemp about not running hard. ''There's no reason,'' he said. ''Once that happens to a guy, they understand right away.'' Sunday's game marked the first time that Kemp, Hanley Ramirez and Crawford had appeared together in the starting lineup this season. Rookie Yasiel Puig started in center against Toronto on Monday, with Andre Ethier getting the night off. Mattingly said Ethier would return to center on Tuesday. ''Luckily we're in the American League (ballpark) where it's not quite the same, you don't need all the extra players,'' Mattingly said. Weiner said last week that arbitration hearings for players contesting suspensions likely would not start until September, which would delay any penalty until next season. But he also indicated the union would urge players to make a deal and get a suspension over with if there was strong evidence of guilt.
