Page 6 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 www.rutherfordweekly.com Thursday, February 24-March 2, 2022 Lydia Skipton, a sixth grade student at Lake Lure Classical Academy, was recognized for her artistic ability by winning a local competition sponsored by the Lake Lure Lions Club. Lydia's poster was among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. "I used the fl owers on my poster to represent peace as they are all together in peace regardless of color or kind," the 12-year-old from Lake Lure said. The poster was selected by for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "We Are All Connected." The local judging was held on Wednesday, November 10th. Lake Lure Lions Club President, Fay Kobland, said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at the Lake Lure Classical Academy. "It is obvious that these young students have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I am so proud that the Lions were able to provide the opportunity to share their visions. The Peace Poster Contest is one of my favorite Lion activities each year." One international grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners were selected in January. The grand prize includes a cash award of US$5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to a special award ceremony. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certifi cate and a cash award of US$500. Locally, Lydia Skipton was honored for her achievement by the Lake Lure Lions Club at their Lions meeting on Thursday, February 10th at the Mountains Branch Library. Lydia received a cash prize and certifi cate. Rhonda Wilson- Williams, the art teacher at the Lake Lure Classical Academy, who presented the contest to her sixth grade art class was ill and unable to attend the meeting. Kristilee Newton, Assistant Principal for grades 5th through 8th, accepted the certifi cate of appreciation for Rhonda Wilson-Williams.
