McGill Salome High update SARAH ELIZABETH (JONES) DAVENPORT Sarah Elizabeth (Jones) Daven- port, 86 years of age, passed away after an extended illness at her home with her children Randy and Patricia Davenport as well as her granddaughter Iona Keesee with her. Sarah lived in Quartzsite for many years and had many friends in the community. Sarah was born on March 2, 1935, in Ashland Oregon. She was the eldest of 4 daughters of Isaac and Elizabeth Jones. She met and mar- ried Robert (Bob) Davenport in 1954 and had 5 children together. She and Robert lived in many places during their life together - First in Kansas and then moving to Montana where they spent many years raising their family. Then they settled down in Quartzsite after retirement. Besides her parents, she was pro- ceeded in death by her husband Robert (Bob) Davenport, sons Robert (Arthur) Davenport and James Charles (JC) Davenport and a daughter Eugenia(Davenport) Dahl. Survived by her are her chil- dren Randy Davenport and Patri- cia Davenport. And her 3 sisters Ina O'Conner of Oregon, Barbara Grabofsky of Oregon and Deanna Balfour of Montana. And many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. May she rest in peace now. The Salome girls basketball team has so far completed their season undefeated at 14-0. They have had some close games that put the spec- tators on edge, but the Lady Frogs have pulled through time and time again. The girls were number one in all of 1a for the fi rst two weeks, they now sit at number 2. When head coach Bryan McCarty was asked about why he thinks the team did so well in their region, he said, "It starts with a belief in our system, and the belief in each other. After that it's all hard work in practice. In the games it's just taking every- thing we learn and using it to out- work every team we play." With this record the Lady Frogs will for sure be going to state playoffs, and we all hope they go far! The Salome boys basketball team has won ten games and lost three, their fi nal regular season games are at home on Friday, January 28 against Bagdad, and away on Tues- day, February 1 at San Pasqual Val- ley. When asked how the season has gone, senior Fernando Amaya said, "It's been good and we've been im- proving as a team." On the academics side, every year the VFW does a voice of democracy essay scholarship. This year we're proud to announce that sophomore, Ollie Huhtala, received fourth place in the state! When asked about her recognition Ollie said, "I think it's great, I never would've thought I'd make it as far as I did." "What a great achievement for her," said Mr. Tapp, the art teacher. Ollie wins bragging rights as well as a total of fi ve hundred and fi fty dollars. Well done Ollie! The food bank is busier than ever. What can you do to be part of the solution?
