Q&A Tell us about your background, in life and art. I was born in Nuevo Leon, Mexico and moved to the U.S. when I was 14. I really believe I owe all my skill and interest in art to my mom. She was an artist herself, one so full of enthusiasm and ambition for any sort of creative practice. Art was always a fun hobby for me, though I suppose I started taking my work more seriously when I was in high school. I enjoyed it, I seemed to be good at it, and I, like my mom, was so eager to learn more and get better. My last two years of high school I entered my work into competitions and won my school a few plaques. I'm currently a Junior in illustration at the Kansas City Art Institute, and though my illustrative work is much different than my paintings, I like to think they're both usually lighthearted and bright. I am trying to venture more into the conceptual side of things, rather than mostly representational work. Effective and compelling visual storytelling is my ultimate goal! with Andrea Carillo 10
