Saturday, August 7, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Women in Focus present program Monday at Bethel Women In Focus will be presenting Called ... According To His Purpose at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 9, at Bethel Assembly of God, 625 Luther Road, in Red Bluff. Mother and daughter Joyce Person and Carla Siemens will share the story of how God called their family for His purpose. Joyce and her husband Bob raised their four children on the mission field in Alaska where they served for 20 years with InterAct Ministries. After a call from their “home church” in Willows 18 years ago they returned and Joyce dove in to ministry as Pastor’s Wife and Helpmeet. This summer Bob and Joyce, surrounded by their children and grandchildren, celebrated 50 years of God’s faithfulness in their marriage. Carla met her husband Dave 32 years ago while her family was on a summer furlough from the mission field. Four years later they were married and Red Bluff became her home. Dave and Carla have raised three children in Red Bluff and thank God for his faithfulness in their lives as well. Joyce and Carla have both taught Womens’ Bible Studies, and share a passion for encouraging women through the word of God. of fun. All welcome at Witness convention in Sacramento The Witnesses’ 2010 "Remain Close to Jehovah!" District Convention is set to be held at the Sacramento Convention Center starting Aug. 13. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that a strong relation- ship with God is vital for spiritual well-being and per- sonal happiness. Jehovah’s Witnesses extend a person- al invitation to everyone from Red Bluff and the sur- rounding areas to attend the seventh of eight three-day events to be held in Sacramento starting at 9:20 a.m. Aug. 13. The theme is based on several passages of the Bible, including Joshua 23:8, Psalm 73:28, Proverbs 3:32 and the key text at James 4:8. Strengthening one’s spiritual- ity will be the focus of the program. Admission to the convention is free, and no collec- tions will be taken. Locally, all of the area’s Witness congregations will be supporting the activity of distributing attractively printed invitations to the convention. An estimated 46,000 will come to Sacramento Convention Center over eight weekends for the programs. For more information, call Brandy Fisher at 598- 9600. Everybody ought to know The Apostle Paul wanted every- body to know about Jesus Christ, the anointed One. After all, Paul’s life was totally transformed by Jesus. Through his own personal experi- ence, Paul knew that Jesus was the only Savior and hope for mankind. Having tormented Christians, bring- ing many to death, Paul understood that the change within his own life, had to be supernatural and real. The life of Paul, as described in the Bible, brings encouragement to ordinary folks. If anyone thinks that they are too sinful to receive God’s love and eternal life, they only need to look at Paul’s life, prior to his conver- sion. The outstanding thing about Paul was that once he turned to Jesus, his commitment was 100 percent. He knew that a "half-baked" commit- ment, was not God’s plan, for anyone professing to be a Christian. In a world of instant pudding, fast foods, DSL, and all the other conve- nient "fast" things available to us, people in our culture often forget about commitment. Frequently those who do make radical changes, because of their commitment to Christ, are labeled fanatics. That can actually be a compliment, because according to the dictionary, "fanatics simply are persons marked and moti- vated by a cause." Commitment is also a positive thing, and is described as "a pledge to do – state of being bound emotionally or intellectually, to a course of action or to another per- son or persons." Paul most assuredly knew that fol- lowing Jesus Christ, would take total commitment. He was not one to "water down" truth. Unfortunately many people are hearing a different Gospel today. Jesus is the only One that brings us to God. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6 KJV) Jesus also stated, "Anyone who puts a hand to the plow, and then looks back is not fit for the King- dom of God." (Luke 9:62 NLT) Once we decide to receive Jesus as our personal Savior and Lord, the power of God enables us to begin living the Christ- ian life, and the power of God keeps us too. "For I can do every- thing through Christ, who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13 NLT) A gospel tune came into my mind today, and soon I was singing the words of praise to Jesus. Once again, my heart rejoiced with the per- sonal knowledge of God’s goodness. The song says, "Everybody ought to know who Jesus is. He is the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, He’s the Fairest of Ten Thou- sand, and everybody ought to know!" I’m 71 years young, and came to know Jesus at age 25. I can truthfully proclaim that – everybody ought to know Jesus. Why can I declare this, after so many years? Because, when I gave my entire life to Jesus, He rec- onciled me to God. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name." (John 1:12 – NKJ) Since that day, when I repented and turned my life over to Jesus Christ, I’ve been so blessed. There are many struggles in life, but because of Jesus, I’ve had God’s peace and joy, present with me. I sometimes say, "I’ve got joy even when I’m sad." Or, I’ll say, "It’s like I have a strong pillar Only as a last resort The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: If an innocent person's life were being threat- ened, and I had the means to prevent death or injury, albeit through violence, I would do so as a last resort. That course of action is in line with the Iron Rule, predecessor to the Golden Rule. The Iron Rule states: "Like begets like. I will give to you what you give to me. Violence returns vio- lence. Love returns love. If you threaten, you will be threatened." With that being said, I must confess the Iron Rule falls woefully short of the ideal moral stan- dard of the Golden Rule, which states do to others what you want done to you. Patricia Martin GodTalk of granite within me — a strong rock of permanent strength." In myself I could never say that. Psalm 31:3 says, "For You are my rock and my fortress." Christ is sweet to my soul, The Lily of the Valley — Christ is that Bright Morn- ing Star, even amid dark times in life, and He is the Fairest of Ten Thousand, for no human being is as wonderful as Jesus. He gives sweet aroma into life — He shines everlasting hope into hurting lives — and He alone can manifest the beauty of God into our lives, because He is the fairest of ten thousand, and much more. I want everybody to know, that Jesus died on that cruel cross, just for you. You can receive Jesus as your Savior and Lord right now. When you pray with all of your heart, He hears and answers. Jesus will never turn you away, as you come to Him with a sincere heart, with a decision to fol- low Him all the days of your life. "…and the one who comes to Me, I will certainly not cast out." (John 6:37 NAS) Jesus Christ is "pure" love and His arms are outstretched to you, even this moment. Ask and receive Him into your heart. He is waiting to turn your life into something beautiful. Patricia Martin leads a ministry called God's Precious Jewels. She provides for the material and spiritual needs of Native American children and their families. If someone is angry, mean, disrespectful or verbally abusive, I can move along without resorting to the same type of behavior and without being affected by them. Perhaps they had the spiritual awareness and eloquence to diffuse potentially threatening confrontations, and because of that, violence was never justified. For myself, a lesser evolved human being, as a last resort when a life is in danger, I can justify vio- lence.
