July 17, 2013 Sea to Sea cyclists on mission to end poverty rolls through town By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Quartzsite, AZ - 180 cyclists arrived in Quartzsite on June 27th for a respite from the scorching heat. The heat was reaching 115 degrees and the cyclists were grateful for the air conditioning in new Community Center. The Sea to Sea Bike Tour is a nine week, 3,900-mile cycling trek across North America designed to raise awareness and funds in support of those living in poverty around the world. The group wants to motivate people to become involved in working with the poor. The cyclists began June 21st at Newport Beach, California and will end up in August 24th in New York City at Staten Island. A full support crew accompanies the tour, including a fully customized mobile kitchen, personal gear truck, and medical support. Dan Ohlson, Communications Manager, erxplained funds gener- 11 www.DesertMessenger.com ated through the tour will support new or ongoing initiatives in the areas of business and community development, and will provide people around the world with access to clean water, immunizations, and other vital medical services. There are 220 total cyclists involved, with 80 cyclists going the full distance from LA to NY. Full distance Cyclists commit to raising $10,000 each. 1 week cyclists commit to raising $2500. Ohlson said, "65% of the proceeds will support the poverty fighting work of our main sponsors: World Renew, Partners Worldwide, and the Reformed Church in America, and 35% will be distributed through a grant process to local programs in the U.S. and Canada that assist the poor." He said local organizations can submit application at Seatosea.org. QUARTZSITE - Hazel Lewellen, a longtime resident of Quartzsite, Ariz., celebrated her 100th birthday on July 10, 2013. Hazel, along with her husband Joe, celebrated at their home in Quartzsite, spending time with family members coming in from Arkansas, California and Texas on July 8th. The party was a success.
