Page 16 January 10 - 16, 2022 BY GEORGE DICKIE Back in the day, it wasn't unheard of for a TV series to replace an actor in a role midstream. Probably one of the most famous cases was that of Darrin Stephens, the beleaguered ad exec husband of witch Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) in the 1964- 72 ABC sitcom "Bewitched." Dick York played the character through four-plus seasons but midway through Season 5, recurring back problems caused him to miss substantial shooting time and even collapse on set. He soon left the series and sadly, save for a handful of guest- starring roles, that would mark the end of his acting career. Season 6 began with a new Darrin, played by Dick Sargent, as well as a pregnant Sam, developments that apparently didn't go over well with viewers as ratings dropped precipitously. Despite the low numbers, the show lasted for another two seasons before Montgomery decided she had enough witchcraft. And like that, Sam, Darrin and "Bewitched" were cast away in 1972.
