Page 16 December 20 - 26, 2021 BY JAY BOBBIN The holiday season is made for traditions, and on Christmas Eve, one of the biggest is "It's a Wonderful Life." Marking its 75th anniversary this year, the Frank Capra-directed classic will get its expected showcase from NBC again on Friday, Dec. 24 – with James Stewart in his iconic portrayal of George Bailey, the Bedford Falls ne'er-do-well whose desperate state draws help from aspiring angel Clarence (Henry Travers), who shows George what life would have been like if he never had existed. Countless television-series episodes have done their own takes on that theme, but there's nothing like the original to tug fully on the heartstrings ... thanks in no small part to the earnest performances by Stewart and as George's true love Mary, Donna Reed. Initially, the film was only a modest success in theaters, but its numerous TV showings over the decades are what have made it such a staple at this time of year.
