The Red Bluff Bulls came a beat away from taking a 1-0 lead over the Redding Tigers in the American Legion Baseball District 2 championship series Thursday. With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Red Bluff's Walker Dodero smacked a ground ball to the second baseman at Red Bluff High School. The Tigers made the force out at second and whipped the ball to first. The throw narrowly beat out a sprinting Dodero to save a 3-3 tie. Dodero, sensing the missed moment, pounded the dirt with his fists. Redding would capitalize in the top of the 11th, scoring two and ultimately beating Red Bluff 5-3 to take a 1-0 lead in a best-of-three series. The winner will represent District 2 in the Area Tournament in Chico next week. Red Bluff, which is the reigning district champion two years running, fell behind in the fourth inning, when Dylan Daily News photo by Andre Byik Red Bluff Bulls pitcher Eric Shreter, center, throws against the Redding Tigers on Thursday at Red Bluff High School. Mumford batted in Kenneth Fudge. The Tigers would score again in the fifth as Thomas Olson knocked an RBI-double to center. Down 2-0, Red Bluff countered in the bottom the frame and took a 3-2 lead courtesy of RBIs by Will Macdonald, Evan Sinclair and Sam Hendricks. Bulls pitcher Eric Shreter, who threw seven innings, extinguished a bases-loaded threat in the seventh inning, but was pulled in the eighth after walking Mumford, who led off the inning. Robby Lasby took over on the mound and walked three more batters in the inning, which allowed the Tigers to knot the game at 3. Sinclair, who went 2for-4 batting on the night, made a dazzling jumping TOUR DE FRANCE Warriors announce deal with Marresse Speights @TehamaSports Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111. Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today, July 13, at Red Bluff High School. ——— NASCAR SF — Zito SD — Stults OAKLAND (AP) — The Golden State Warriors have confirmed the deal struck earlier this week with free agent Marreese Speights. The announcement Friday gives Golden State another versatile power forward off the bench whom they hope can fill the void left by Carl Landry, who agreed to a fouryear, $26 million contract with the Sacramento Kings last Saturday. Speights averaged 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in the final 39 games with Cleveland after coming over in a trade from Memphis last season. Speights' deal is for three years and about $11 million. The third year is a team option. The 25-yearSpeights was drafted 16th overall out of Florida by Philadelphia in 2008. He has averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in his first five NBA seasons. catch at shortstop in the top of the ninth, saving the 3-3 tie as Redding had the bases loaded. After the Tigers went three up three down in the top of the 10th, Red Bluff's best chance to win the game came in the bottom of the frame. The Bulls loaded the bases with no outs, but a strike out and Redding turning a double play quashed Red Bluff's Froome to make the last week interesting. A rear-wheel failure at the worst time dropped Alejandro Valverde from second place to nowhere. And Mark Cavendish got a 25th stage win to lift the British sprinter to a third-place tie on the all-time list of cycling's premier race. All this on a Stage 13 that, on paper, looked beforehand as though it might be a dud. But the riders are ensuring there's no such thing as a dull day at the 100th Tour. Much of the media buildup to this first Tour since the fall of Lance Armstrong focused on cycling's fight against doping. But LOUDON, N.H. (AP) — Brad Keselowski is back on top of NASCAR. Well, for a race, at least. But he's quickly running out of time to make it back to the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship and defend his series championship. His first pole of the season might give his season the boost he needs to become a contender. Keselowski turned a lap of 135.922 mph on Friday to set a track record at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Keselowski won only his third career pole and first since 2011. With eight races left until the 12-driver Chase field is set, Keselowski is winless and sitting in an uncomfortable 13th place in the points standings. ''There is a sense of urgency but not a sense of panic,'' Keselowski said. ''I think there is a strong difference between the two. We are eager to get going, we are hungry and feel like we can do it but I don't feel a sense of panic. There are still two months of racing essentially to get into the Chase.'' Keselowski led a fast day at the track as nine drivers topped the previous track record held by Ryan Newman, who went 135.232 in 2011. Ten drivers topped that lap until points leader Jimmie Johnson's second-fastest qualifying time was scrapped after his car failed inspection. His No. 48 Chevrolet, which had two issues in the pre-qualifying inspection, failed after his attempt because both sides of the front were too low. He'll start in the rear in 43rd. ''We were able to get the car right,'' crew chief Chad Knaus said. ''just not exactly right.'' Johnson will actually start behind 71-year-old Morgan Shepherd. Shepherd will become the oldest driver to start a NASCAR Sprint Cup race. No dull day at 100th Tour SAINT-AMAND-MONTROND, France (AP) — Wily Tour de France riders who used the wind and worked together to trap their rivals turned a trek across the flats of central France into a thriller on Friday, as exciting and, for the most unfortunate, as decisive as any spectacular day in the mountains. Yellow jersey holder Chris Froome lost a chunk of his race lead but not enough to gravely endanger the Briton heading toward what is shaping up to be an intriguing finale in the Alps. The team of Alberto Contador dealt the former two-time champion back into the game, putting him close enough to On the tube Saturday AUTO RACING 7 a.m. ESPN2 — NASCAR, Nationwide Series, pole qualifying for New England 200, at Loudon, N.H. 8 a.m. SPEED — NASCAR, Sprint Cup, "Happy Hour Series," final practice for New Hampshire 300, at Loudon, N.H. 10 a.m. SPEED — NASCAR, Whelen Modified Series, at Loudon, N.H.
