The joyous event begins at 12:00 noon and will continue until 4pm giving everyone plenty of time to partake in tours and live German Christmas music performed by 'Edelweiss 2' before the annual Christmas parade makes it way to downtown Rutherfordton at 5pm, followed by the lighting of the largest Christmas Tree in North Carolina. Bechtler Heritage Center guests will appreciate authentic German cookies and refreshments, view period artifacts and exhibits, walk amidst holiday lights and decorations, that will transport them to the 1830s. The Bechtler Legacy lives on through the tours given during the open house by docents, who are excited about Rutherfordton's place in North Carolina's gold history The heritage center also serves as the headquarters for the North Carolina Gold Trail, which connects more than 30 counties with historical signifi cance from the NC Gold Rush. Exhibits include: the original Coin Press designed and used by Bechtler, on loan from the American Numismatic Society in New York, one of two known Bechtler Rifl es in existence and Bechtler's 1840s square grand piano. Special Exhibit during the open house is the largest Collection of Bechtler Coins – The Norman Jenkins Collection brought to us by Betty Jenkins. Christopher Bechtler minted America's fi rst one- dollar gold coin, 17 years before the U.S. Mint. The Bechtlers minted more than $2.24 million dollars in gold coins, stimulating commerce in the Southeast leaving a permanent legacy to both Rutherford County and American history. The Bechtler Heritage Center and North Carolina Gold Trail Headquarters provides educational material, programs and tours throughout the year and welcome your donations.
