THE TOMAHAWK Alpha Mu Chapter 4 I n the last issue of The Alpha Mu Tomahawk, I discussed the perseverance of our chapter and our brothers' ability to overcome difficult times with agility. Weathering the storm has been difficult, but we are happy that pandemic regulations are subsiding, which allows us to gather as a group once again. I can confidently say that the Alpha Mu Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity is in a fantastic position to expand our brotherhood as we return to 219 Ash Ave. With a pandemic dramatically reducing the number of events we could hold, a university- imposed moratorium prevented out-of-house members into the chapter facility, limited capacity at Greek Week events, and restricted formals or semi-formals. Combined, we found that morale in the house was low. Since April, the chapter has begun to return to "normal," allowing for a better reception of members that took place this fall. Over the summer, Chris Banwart '24 and I worked diligently to recruit a pledge class of Tough Times Never Last—Brotherhood Does Outlining a Plan to Bounce Back from COVID-19 Setbacks As Alumni Corporation Board (ACB) terms are expiring for Ted Hovda '73, Dave Matulac '93, and Josh Hibben '02, we need your input. Please read the candidates' backgrounds, previous experience, and running statement before coming to a decision. Use the attached ballot to select the brothers you feel should fill these three vacancies. Please return to Theta Chi Fraternity, P.O. Box 2407, Ames, IA 50010 no later than December 15, 2021. Ted Hovda '73 Garner, Iowa • Current employment: Lawyer • Undergraduate experience: Treasurer • Alumni experience: Corporation Board member since 1980 "I have been privileged to serve on the Theta Chi Board of Directors for many years. I was a board member when we paid off the mortgage for the 1960s addition. I vividly remember the day, 25 years ago, when I received a telephone call that the house was on fire. The fraternity literally rose from the ashes to rebuild a new house with the support of our alumni brothers. I have now witnessed the mortgage for the new house being paid off, and our fraternity is fiscally sound. I would appreciate your support for another term on the board of directors." Dave Matulac '93 Ames, Iowa • Current employment: Iowa Department of Transportation (Traffic and Safety Bureau) • Undergraduate experience: Chapter President and Secretary, VEISHEA Co- Chairman • Alumni experience: Corporation Board 1994- 2002, 2019 to present "As a past and current corporation board member, I have seen how university and fraternity life has changed over the years. I look forward to working with the undergraduate members as we approach the 100th anniversary of Alpha Mu Chapter. I am hoping to provide guidance and foster a willingness to stay involved as alumni so the chapter will be here for another 100 years. I strongly feel you should give back to those that have helped you along the way, and Theta Chi has definitely done that for me." Josh Hibben '02 Ames, Iowa • Current employment: Cloud Product Owner at John Deere • Undergraduate experience: Marshal, Scholarship Chairman, and House Manager • Alumni experience: Alumni Corporation Board, Chapter Advisory Board, and House Director Search Committee "During my time as an undergraduate and alumni member of the Alpha Mu Chapter, I have witnessed the positive impact that Theta Chi has had on many young men by providing them with valuable leadership skills in an environment of brotherhood that forges lifelong friendships. As a corporation board member, I will work to ensure the future success of the Alpha Mu Chapter by helping to maintain a quality facility while emphasizing a culture of leadership, integrity, and academic excellence." Write-in candidate Your name Deadline to submit is December 15, 2021. WE NEED YOUR VOTE! Alumni Corporation Board Election Ballot 17 men. With retention being a problem in years past, we look forward to initiating at least 80 percent of these young men, led by Marshal Ben Wulf '23. We are still feeling the impact of COVID-19 with only 27 members living in house. We've strategized a plan to maximize occupancy, which will be by recruiting underclassmen. We are hoping that we have a full house of men to boost morale and strengthen brotherhood. Aside from the pandemic, the house itself has also seen some changes. Over the summer, Logan Brown '23 spearheaded improvements to the chapter house with countless hours of hard work from Denise Denton and Ethan Tarantino '23. With their assistance, we restored landscaping and made a patio addition to the volleyball pit. Not only was the chapter house itself revitalized, but the membership itself was also revitalized. Fortunately, morale in the house has begun to bounce back. Members are thrilled to be back in Ames and look forward to a great semester! Fraternally, Ian C. Hunter '23 Chapter President ichunter@iastate.edu Members before Theta Chi's Pancake Breakfast. Members practice Yell Like Hell for Homecoming.
